Nick's Story

Life After graduating from UT Austin I moved to Houston, to work for Gulf Oil Co in the oil and gas business. One day in 1982, on the way to meet my brother for our regular lunchtime game of raquetball at the downtown Y, I stopped by the Navy recruiting office in the big downtown post office, to ask about the Naval Aviation program. One thing led to another, and before long I was in Pensacola, FL reporting to Aviation Officer Candidate School. Four difficult but entertaining months later, I received my commission as an Ensign, and headed off to primary flight training in Corpus Christi. There I began the process of learning to fly, and somehow did well enough to be selected for jets and was assigned next to Beeville, TX for intermediate and advanced jet training. Over the next year I learned how to drop bombs, shoot rockets, dogfight and most importantly, qualify in landing a jet on an aircraft carrier. I received my Naval Aviators' wings in 1984, and was shipped out to San Diego, CA. In San Diego I met Christine Eckman the day after my birthday at a popular nitespot in Pacific Beach. I'd never met anyone as beautiful and funny as Chris, and I spent every minute I could with her. We dated for two years, eventually moving together from San Diego up to Alameda, when I was assigned to the USS Carl Vinson, which was homeported there. We were married in a beautiful ceremony in the middle of San Francisco Bay at the US Naval base on Treasure Island in May of 1988. After 7 exciting years in the Navy, I left active duty in 1989, to take a position with IBM in Seattle, WA. Our daughter Taylor was born in Renton in 1990. In 1993 I accepted a job offer from Apple, who moved us back to San Francisco, where our son Nicholas was born in April of 1993. Two years later we moved again, this time to Denver, where we stayed for the next 3 1/2 years. Next came Motorola, who moved us to Huntsville, Alabama. After a year and a half Motorola shut down the Huntsville location and I accepted a position with Dell, who moved us back to Austin in 1998, 19 years after I had moved away! ger. My first assignment was developing the first sub $1000 PC ever to be offered by Dell (the Dimension L series). After this I moved back to managing communications product development, involving DSL modems and later, Wi-Fi product development efforts in the Consumer Products Division. Late in 2000 I accepted a position with Cirrus Logic, where I was responsible for building a new wireless technology group, based just outside of Boulder, CO. We had lived in Denver previously for a little over 3 years and loved it, so my wife and kids were thrilled to be moving back to the Rocky mountains and all the things we loved doing there. After two wonderful years back in the Rockies, Cirrus Logic fell on some very hard times and shut down my group. I then took a job Intersil, who moved us out to Melbourne, Florida. In Florida we bought a home in a beachside community called Indialantic, where we had a blast. We bought a nice Sea Ray boat and spent weekends fishing or just boating down the Intracoastal river to the Sebastian intlet or some nice little islands for picnics. One year we took our boat down to Key West and spent Christmas through New Years, what a terrific time. The water in the Keys is incredibly beautiful, and the weather couldn't have been nicer. Two years after we moved to Florida we moved again, this time up to Boston, where we spent a year and a half in a great New England town called Westford. My best friend from my flying days in the Navy was attending the Kennedy School at Harvard as a National Security Fellow, and we were able to spend a lot of fun times together. Family ski trips up to New Hampshire, and a fantastic "guys only" guided fishing trip to a remote lake up in Maine were just a couple of our adventures. In June of 2006 the company I worked for moved us from Mass back down to Austin, where we now live in Avery Ranch. Out two kids attend Vista Ridge high school, where our daughter Taylor is a Senior and son Nick is a Sophomore. Both are great students and play on the school tennis team. Taylor participated in a couple of plays with the drama group and had a wonderful time. It's great to be back in Austin again!!
