Nicola's Story
Life
I married a wonderful, supportive man in June of 2001 after being friends and dating for several years. Unfortunately, we have had to deal with great adversity since getting married, because I have been incredibly sick and have been unable to work for more than three years because of it, which has made me feel really useless. Your prayers are greatly appreciated that I will one day soon be well enough to go back to Social Work and feel like I am contributing something to this world in such great need! I hope everyone is doing well and is at peace. Now that some time has passed, I reflect back on all the many attempted treatments, surgeries, health crises, and hospitalizations, all of which have prevented me from returning to Social Work and from becoming a foster parent with my husband. We have drawn strength from each other and relied heavily on the support of friends and family. Our journey through life together so far has been very humbling, and we would give almost anything for a "normal" life/marriage!! College
I somehow managed to make it through Grad School with a major in Social Work and a minor in Psychology, and have been able to serve in many ways until I became too sick to work. I just want to get back to that and feel like I'm making some positive difference, so again, your prayers are tremendously appreciated!
Workplace
I have dedicated my life to service in the field of Social Work, which makes it even that much harder to not be abe to work due to health problems. I have been able to experience a variety of settings, including group homes, families, schools, juvenile detention settings, foster homes, charitable organizations, health agencies, hospitals, and outpatient clinics, all as opportunities to provide services to children and families who had significant needs. Although the work was very emotionally difficult, it was also tremendously rewarding, particularly the work I did for some time with HIV+ homeless adults in San Bernardino. I have recently become very interested in the area of Hospice Social Work if I am able to return to work.
