Nina's Story
By volunteering/serving on the Board of Directors at our local animal control/humane society and having almost daily contact with the animals and personnel, I see/realize the great needs of the animals and challenges a shelter faces. I have adopted numerous animals through the years and currently have 2 dogs and a cat; all are shelter alumni and now beloved family members. It is hard not to bring them all home but we do everything possible to find each and every one of them a safe, loving home, including spay/neuter, utilizing petfinder and working with 501(c)(3) rescue groups. I currently write 2 newspaper columns promoting our pets, shelter news, pet tips/care, and breed history, speak to clubs and civic groups, and am a shelter docent. I also take 300 pictures a week to display on petfinder, answer inquiries and maintain our shelter's site. Our shelter receives around 100 pets a week. Sadly we have many more pets than people to adopt them. The numbers won't change until people become responsible pet parents and spay or neuter their pets.
The rest of my spare time is spent as a "pink lady" at our local hospital. I've been a hospital volunteer for a number of years. A hospital is a stressful place and sometimes the patients and families just need someone to talk to, someone to car...Expand for more
e. The most joyful time is when babies are born. I feel volunteering is one of the most noble things a person can do. You will never be sorry you were kind to someone and they will never forget it, even if it is just a kind word.
I currently play first violin in a string trio. For the past 40 years, I have been a member of a music club. It is interesting to learn about composers and music history, plus to entertain and be entertained by talented musicians. When people think of a music club, they think classical music and a stuffy, snobby group of people. That is not the case with our club. We have a lot of fun and all types of music is on our programs. One month we have a guest artist(s), which is always a treat. Besides music club, our string trio group performs at nursing homes and occasionally at civic functions. When our string quartet formed 30 years ago, until our cellist moved to S.C. and we became a trio, our children were small. As they entered adulthood and married, our group held a bridal tea for each child. Being together for such a long period, we've been through good and bad times in our lives, laughed and cried together, and truly appreciated seeing each other's family pictures over lunch! Needless to say, our group has a strong bond that only death will break.
