Nolan's Story
Life
This is going to be real quick and dirty. After graduating from Hayfork High School in 1972 I went to work on a cattle ranch in Bridgeville for the Hunt family.
A couple of years later with thoughts of marrying and having a family I got a job with the Saw Mill in Hayfork. The marriage didn't happen so I decided to try fighting forest fires.
I joined the Forest Service and was assigned to a Tanker Crew ( now known as an Engine Crew). I also worked for a couple of seasons on a fuels crew and then was offered a permenant job with the Forest Service on an Engine Crew on the Sequoia National Forest.
I started working on the Sequoia National Forest in 1979 and have been here ever since. I'm in Recreation and we work trails and do maintenance on campgrounds. I still go off on fire assignments during the summer. Durin...Expand for more
g the winter months we have an agreement with California State Parks to provide groomed snowmobile trails and I operate the groomer on approximately 100 miles of groomed trail.
Also in 1990 I became a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for Tulare County. I usualy work beats in the mountain posts, when I'm not working for the Forest Service.
I never intended the Forest Service to be a career but I now have a minimum of 4 years to retirement. With down sizing and special programs in the Forest Service I have been unable to transfer to a Northern Calif. Forest. I plan on returning to N. Calif. after my retirement.
I never married and have no childern. I've been to alot of places most folks only see on vacation and I have been paid to be there. I've met some really great people and not so great. But all in all I have had a great time.
