Norma's Story
Life
One year after high school, I married Jerry Peters, (Downey class of 56). He enlisted into the US Air Force 3 months before we were married We lived in Missouri for a year while he was stationed there, before going to Okinawa for 16 mo's.
We have two sons, Arlen and Doug. Arlen taught Biology at Modesto High School and coaches, and Doug is a Sergeant with the California Highway Patrol. Both retired now after 35 and 30 years respectively. They are both happily married and have given us 5 beautiful granddaughters that we adore, and 5 great granddaughters.
In the past, we have enjoyed family outings such as athletic events, snow skiing, tennis and hiking. Among my more notable hikes, I have hiked up to the summit of Mt. Whitney, and to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite four times.
After completing a course at a local Business College, I worked for Franklin and Downs in the business office for one year, and ended as a receptionist and office assistant at Conagra Dried Fruit and Nut Company for 10 years before retiring. 30 years altogether working at the same building, but name changed 3 times before ending with Conagra. I loved working and loved the people, but the company closed down, otherwise I'd still be working.
We gave up our seasonal passes to Bear Valley each year for skiing, but I still enjoy doing front flips off the diving board with my granddaughters.
We have enjoyed numerous trips to Hawaii and to various states, but would like to see more. Just recently enjoyed a cruise to the Inside Passage of Alaska.
My life is tied around my family, especially my 5 granddaughters. The oldest, Ashley, attended Heidelberg Univ. in Germany for more advanced study of German language, and graduated from UC Davis just before her wedding. 2 others attended college: Hannah graduated after 5 years at Baylor Univ. in Waco, TX., where my father attended, and also where my mother and father were both born and raised. And, Hannah also was a pole vaulter on the Baylor Bears Track and Field Team for four years. She has been to France 5 summers (to help her French language), in add...Expand for more
ition to Spain and Italy. After being a Sales Rep., she was promoted to the position of National Category Analyst for Nestle Products. Britt (30) graduated with 5 years at Cal State Fullerton after being on full athletic scholarship for Women's Basketball . She completed a Master's program also, and is teaching and coaching at Highland High School in Bakersfield. Morgan isin her second year teaching, and Addyson completed college, and Masters program. They are all athletic, smart, highly competitive, and beautiful. They have awesome parents.
After being married for 57 and a half years, I lost my husband on November 2, 2012 to Alzheimer's. Also, lost my great grandson on July 5th, 2013, in a drowning accident! Heartbreaking! But, life goes on, and I'm doing very well! I feel very fortunate that I have my family, great friends, and good health! Life is good!
Our MHS Class of 1954 had their 60 Year Reunion September 27, 2014 at Sue Gallo Coleman's home and gardens for another fabulous evening under the stars. Wish all in my class could have been there, but there were over 100 in attendance! It was a good time to celebrate friendships...new and old. Am looking forward to our next big Class Reunion, the 65th in the year 2019
Just returned from a 14 day trip to Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia. My first trip to Europe. Also swam in the Adriatic Sea. After returning home, I've signed up for an 8 day River Cruise in May of 2019 on the Danube River from Nuremberg, Germany through Vienna, Austria to Budapest, Hungary, and that trip was great! Went on another trip to Switzerland, the Netherlands Germany, France, and Austria.. Never too old to travel! I' m just starting!
I'm on Facebook under Norma Britton Peters, if anyone would want a new friend.
I will be attending a Committee Luncheon meeting Jan. 24th to start planning our 65th Class Reunion for this year of 2019. Hope everyone will be able to attend. I'm looking forward to it!
