Norma's Story
Wow! Where do I begin?? As most of you know, Jimmy Blair and I married before we got out of school, and we had a beautiful daughter, Shari Lyn. We divorced in 1973 and I remarried. That marriage was not to be and we officially divorced in 1983. (I know....what's with the 3's???) Then in 1984 I married my present husband, Stephen Draper. I had been very active in the San Jacinto Corvette Club since 1976, and all the members used to tease me about my 60's model, 70's model and 80's model!! (husbands, not Corvettes!) They kept expecting me to get a 90's model, which I never did. You might say Stephen broke the marriage merry-go-round for me. We did not have any children together, but he had a daughter and son from previous marriages. They quickly became my children, too. Now we have two grandsons and two granddaughters. Our youngest turned 30 this year! He and his wife live in Magnolia, Texas and have no children yet. Shari lives in Clute with her husband and 21 yr. old son Michael. Michael is confined to a wheelchair with Muscular Dystrophy. That keeps her really busy! Our other daughter lives in Cypress, Texas with her husband and three children, Ashlee, Tanner and Kendale. Kendale is our youngest grandchild at 2 years old! Stephen and I live on our ranch in Columbus, Texas. We raise a few cattle out here and some in town by the Colorado River. We found out a long time ago that you can't make a decent living off cattle! Fortunately, his mother left him a lot of good commercial land in Columbus and he has been developing it and has done very well for the community. We love to go on cruises and I guess you could say we are "cruise-a-holics"!! We used to travel a lot more places until he had a stroke two years ago and we haven't been able to fly as much. The cruises out of Galveston work perfectly for us. Those of you who haven't seen me in years will probably look at my picture and think I substituted someone else's! But I am one of the blessed people that actually got better with age. I tell everyone now that I am the "ugly duckling" of my class. It's amazing what a little makeup will do!!! Anyway, this is me now and I am enjoying life to the fullest!
2012 Update
Years pass and lives change. In 2004 our son got a divorce and is still single. In 2010, our oldest grandson, Michael...Expand for more
, lost his battle with Muscular Dystrophy. Shortly after, Shari and her husband divorced. My mother passed away in February 2011. Jennifer's family has remained stable, with Ashlee 17 and a senior in high school, Tanner 13 and Kendale 6 and in Kindergarten . They are making plans to move to Columbus in the near future. We are building a convenience store/gas station here in Columbus with plans to open in June of 2013. Jennifer is going to be our General Manager of Operations. I attended my 45th high school reunion last month. It was great seeing so many of our classmates. My life has been good and I am a very happy woman!
2013 Update
Oh my goodness, another year already! This is March and we have only been on one cruise so far. In January we cruised with my sister, Shirley and a couple of dear friends from the Corvette club we used to belong to. We sailed to Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Falmouth Jamaica. This cruise rates right up with one of the very best times we have had. I will never get tired of cruising Royal Caribbean!! We will celebrate my birthday next month on RCCL Mariner of the Seas. No earth-changing news so far this year.
2016 Update
As before I said we were going to open a convenience store here in Columbus, Texas. We accomplished that in 2014. Snappy's Market-Columbus was designed, built and opened! Our daughter Jennifer, from Houston became General Manager and our daughter Shari came in as Vice President- Marketing. We worked every day in the store and stayed quite busy! Shari moved to Columbus and basically became the store manager as Jennifer stayed in Cypress to raise her family. (she came down several times a week for a few hours). In May 2015, Jennifer left the company and Shari was to take over the store when we finally retired again! That was not to be. On July 10, 2015 Shari was tragically killed in a auto accident on the road from our ranch to town. Things will never be the same around here. We decided to sell the store in November and were fully out by December. Now that we are finally retired for good, we are back to cruising! It is by far my favorite thing to do. I miss Shari so much, but I know she is with me in my heart and watches over me daily. If it is God's wiil, we will be together again. Until then, I am enjoying my life the best way I can. God bless you all.
