Norma's Story
Life
After graduating from Lamphere, I commuted to Oakland University for a few years. I left OU in 1969 (without a degree) and moved to Saginaw to marry someone I met in Saginaw during the summer of 1968. We had one daughter, Michelle, before we divorced in 1973.
I finished my bachelor's degree at Saginaw Valley State University and also have been on the staff at SVSU since 1979 in the Development/Alumni Relations areas. Also completed a master's degree in educational administration at Central Michigan University. I really enjoyed working in a college environment.
My daughter, Michelle, is married and lives in the Kalamazoo area. And I'm the proud grandmother of two wonderful girls, Katelyn and Audrey.
In 1990 I married an Professor of Art from Saginaw Valley, but we divorced in 2009. My mother was quite ill for the past couple of years and I had leased an apartment in Rochester to be better able to care of her. But the commute took its toll on me (also rolled my CRV over on I-75 one morning before the snow was cleared) and I'm back living in Saginaw. Mom passed away in July 2006. Dad is now in a nursing home in Clawson after a stroke and is visited every day by his wife Bonnie.
(Update June 2007) I'm leaving my position at Saginaw Valley State University after 28 years to become the Director of Development and Marketing at the Saginaw Art Museum.
(Update April 2009) The Saginaw Art Museum ran out of money to pay full-time staff. So I'm currently "on...Expand for more
sabbatical" (laid-off) and searching for a new career.
(Update 2009) I moved to the Kalamazoo, MI area to be closer to my daughter and her family. My Dad passed away in December 2009.
(Update August 2011) In June 2010 I started working part-time at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Kalamazoo as their publications assistant. I bought a house in Portage, MI about a mile from my daughter's house. I love my new life here on the west side of the state! I'm also taking oil painting classes at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts and finally starting to realize my dream of being an artist.
(update February 2018) In mid-2017, I left my part-time job at the church and am enjoying having more time to spend on family history research and painting. In October I finished a 300-page manuscript about my uncle, aunt, and their four children who all died in a plane crash in the Pacific Ocean in 1957. My next large genealogy project is to write a history of my Clack grandparents who lived in China from 1910 to 1923.
Just after Thanksgiving 2017 I lost my beloved 14-year old dog "Dennis". Losing him was just like losing a family member. He is now with my Mom in Heaven! Energetic puppy "Henry" (new profile photo) joined my household in Memorial Day weekend of 2018.
During November and December 2019, I had a retrospective exhibition of my oil paintings at the Portage District Library. It was my first-ever solo art exhibit! I'm still working on more paintings - my creative passion!
