Norma 's Story

I was adopted as a baby, but my new mom died (cancer) when I was 3 years old. My father remarried and at 6 years old, I came back to live with my dad and the new bride. After a few years, my dad lost his job and without an education, he had to go to work picking cotton, potatoes... etc. While he was gone, I was place in homes that needed someone to babysit and clean. At the age of 12, I was place in Rev. Gallardo's home in Laredo, Texas, my hometown. It was better than any of the other homes, but there were problems there too. Rev Gallardo was a Methodist minister, English teacher and a classical violinist. He was transferred to Fort Worth, Wichita Falls, Texas (that's when I arrived), San Angelo, Texas and then he came to California where he eventually retired. At 22, I joined the Army left San Angelo, Texas, did basic training at Fort McClellan, Alabama and trained as a medical corpsman at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. After my discharge, I move to California, got married and divorced and have two sons, two grandsons and a granddaughter plus 2 dead beat ex-mates. I went to East Los Angeles College (ELAC) in 1975, after 1 1/2 year I dropped out with the intention of resuming my accounting classes at night. I had 2-3 jobs at that time in order to support us. I did manage to get better jobs as a bookkeeper, account payable and receivable and payroll. I stopped working in 1982 to take care of my son who was born 3 1/2 months premature. Ten years later upon returning back to work, I wasn't prepared for the computer age and got scared started taking care of elderly people (85-95years old). I still do that privately, but when my client dies, I go and work at an agency until I get a new client. Private care pays a lot better than working with an agency...I work 5 hours a day and earn more than working 12 hours with the agency. I'm on disability and waiting to have spinal surgery sometime this month or next...I hope to go back to work by the middle of next year....going crazy with very little work to do here at home because my significant other, Michael, does most of it in 30-45 minutes. Michael and I live in our 37 foot motor home (Pace Arrow). Michael wants to trade it for a newer one, but finally decided to upgrade it instead... We are getting rid of the sofa and replacing it with 2 recliners and a 55" TV, replacing the gas stove with an electric one,a new micro-wave,and adding a dish-washer, and replacing the washer/dryer with a newer model. After that the bathroom will be remodeled...getting rid of the tub and replacing with a corner shower stall. In the storage bay, we are adding a small freezer and a put the 15" TV from the bedroom in the bay too. The 20" TV in the living room now will be put in the bedroom. These are few of my memories that I remember as I was growing up: 1) While my mom was in the hospital in San Antonio, Texas, a dog bit me and I had to have a shot in my stomach for the next 21 days. I used to tell my son that I didn't cried when I got those shots, but before my dad died, he told my son that after the first shot....I started to cried even before we got to the doctor's office because I knew where we were going & what I was getting. 2) I was a tom-boy and I loved to climb trees and roof tops. One day while on the roof top, I saw a hive of yellow jackets, so I decided to knock the hive down...did not planned my escape, so I had all these yellow jackets flying towards me. I didn't have any place to hide on the rooftop so I got stung 2-3 times on my legs once on my arm and once on my lip. When I finally came down from the roof, my dad was shocked to see the right side of my face so swollen my eye was shut. But even after all of that, I continue doing the same thing, but I did learned my lesson well, I planned my get aways. 3) When I came to stay with Rev. & Mrs. Gallardo, I went to the only Christian school in Laredo at that time. I was suppose to be in the sixth grade, but after a couple of weeks, my teacher found out that the reason I didn't do my reading assignments was because I couldn't read or speak English. Most of the teacher in the public schools at that time spoke to you in Spanish if you didn't understand how to do your homework. They called my foster parents and told them that they were placing me in the third grade. I was so humiliated because the kids in the 3rd grade were only 8 years old. Sometimes, when the parents came to have a meeting with the teacher, they miss took me for the teacher. That's when I decided to go to summer school for the next two year at home...Rev. Gallardo schooled me for the 3 months we were on vacation. When I was suppose to go to the 6Th grade, I took a test and passed it and went to the 7Th grade instead. I continued going to summer school until I graduated and got my diploma in July, 1962, from WFHS. 4) I always love to go to school on Fridays when our football team played at home because of the pep rallies. I got to wear my school colors...red silk blouse with a black skirt. 5) On November 4Th, 2004, I had my right hip replaced. After 8 days in the hospital, I came home and I started walking with a walker. Then about 4 weeks later I started walking with a cane and then 2 weeks later I stopped using the cane. One night as I was taking my grandson to the bathroom, he turn around and asked me if I was not old any more because I wasn't using my walker or cane. 6) How do my old friends of 48+ years ago remember me... I have no idea because I'm sorry to say that I also don't remember...Expand for more
them. I will be buying my yearbooks from '59-'63 in a couple of weeks and hopefully, my memories will come back. I wasn't very out going as I wrote before, I wasn't allow to socialize very much with my classmates. There were 2 sister (Gloria and Linda Flores) that I do remember but only because they went to church with me 2-3 times every week. 7) Speaking of Gloria and Linda, we decided to go to have our hair done for our graduation picture (with cap and gown) one day in July. As we left the hair salon, we turn around the corner and in front of a dress shop, there were lots of pigeons on a wire above us and as we past under them, one of the birds decided to poop and the poop landed on top of Linda's bee hive do. We didn't notice it until this whitish watery liquid start running down her forehead...we had to return to the salon so she could have her hair wash. She was so upset because we didn't have any more time to have her hair redone. She finally wore her hair the same way as mine....Cleopatra style. Back then I had so much hair and had it thin out. I wish I had all that hair now. 8) I didn't have anybody pushing me to excel in school. I was sent to school because it was the law. When I got home from school, I had chores to do. The chores stopped for a while in order to start preparing dinner. After cleaning the kitchen...I had to go back and finish my chores. On the days when I had to do the laundry and the ironing, those were the days that I would start doing my homework at 10pm and I fell asleep on top of my books and woke up around 3-4am and went to bed only to get up at 5:30am to start breakfast. So whatever I accomplished, I did because I was interested in improving myself. I knew I had to study, learn and work for thing in my life. I'm not afraid to work because I have worked hard all my life. What I'm afraid of is a person who is afraid of me because I live from pay check to pay check. Through the years, I have lost lots of materialistic things and some of those items can't even be replaced, but life must go on. We are not rich, but live comfortable in a home that will go with us where ever we go. Its our motor home and we love it. 10) Here in California, I had to travel 31 miles to go to work. It took 1 1/2-2 hours to get there. I worked 5 hours and then had to drive back those 31 miles again with same amount of time to get home. I drove on 5-6 freeways. When I go back to work next year,I want to work here in Orange County (Home of the Angels, Disneyland (Anaheim) and Knots Berry Farm (Buena Park). 11) Had my spinal surgery last year, but it's worse now than before. I also have to remove my left hip implant because it started giving problems 7-8 months after I got it. Now we know that the problem was not that the doctor nor I did any thing wrong, I now have a claim against DePuy. Their implants have been recall. I hope that as soon as I get my new implant, all by hip and back problems will get better. 12) We will be moving to Reno, Nevada around the end of January, 2012. Sold our 37' RV, but we have an order for a new that will be ready for pick up around December or January (Las Vegas). Michael will be taking her to Reno as soon as possible. 13) When I was thirteen or fourteen and living in Fort Worth, Texas, a group of kids (including me) got dressed in our best costumes for Halloween. we went trick or treating and then we gathered together by my home. It was still early so we decided to scared the two ladies who ran the Wesleyan Community Center. We had seen them arrived from their weekly night out and they had been drinking so they were talking and laughing. We saw them turn on their lights to their bedrooms and when they turn them off, we started with our plan. Some of us ran around the porch that went around the building and other threw small rocks to the balcony on the second floor. after about 10-15 minutes of doing our very best to scare them, I decided to get a bigger rock and I threw it up, but I have never been a good pitcher so the rock landed on the first floor window breaking the glass. When the glass broke, everybody started to run home because that woke the ladies up and they called the police. I lived across from their building so I could see the police when they arrived. My heart was still beating so hard, I could feel it when I touch my chest. I was so happy my foster parents were not home be-cause I would have been whipped. It took me an hour to settle down and go to sleep. In the morning, I got up and look outside to see if the police were still there, but was glad that they were gone. After school, I went over there and I saw the damage I did. I went home and told my foster mother what we did and that it was me who threw the big rock that broke the window. She took me to the center and told the ladies what I had done. I thought they were going to call the police and they were going to take me to jail so I started crying. They told me that I was going to work in the center after school for 3 months to pay for the repair of the window and that I had to tell the police what I did. The police said that I did the right thing and they were not going to put me in jail because the ladies came up with a lot better punishment for me and when that punishment was over , my second punishment, that my foster mother gave me, started. I had to write a book report twice a month for 3 months. I learn my lesson so well, that I used the same tactics when my son came home with a new wallet when he didn't have any money to buy it.
