St. Elmo ghost town.
Another great drive, amazing scenery..... and another pass over 12,000 feet.
Salida, CO -- Great local galleries and restaurants; including some pretty crazy art!
Enhancing the white water experience .....placing large boulders in the Arkansas River to create better waves for paddlers.
Buena Vista, CO -- small town near the headwaters of the Arkansas River. Lots of outdoor recreation.......and a riverside park with ceramic tile furniture. Oh yes!
Did you know that huge Sequoia trees used to grow in Colorado? Yep, and their petrified trunks and fossils were fasinating at Florissant National Monument.
Other excursions included visiting mining towns, and enjoying more fall colors.
And we saw Big Horn Sheep on the way to the top.
The views from the top of Pikes Peak were amazing.
This is just an example of the route the Pikes Peak Highway takes. There is even a required brake temperature checkpoint half way down.
Yep, 14,110 feet.
We thought we had already done some high elevation driving, but traveling 19 miles to the top of Pikes Peak in second gear took us to another level.
Next excursion....Pikes Peak Highway. Which started near Crystal Reservoir.
The "garden" has amazing rock formations and is archeologically unique.
Next stop, west of Colorado Springs where we visited the Garden of the Gods
Gotta love the kissing camels.
In addition to exploring Breckenridge (which we really liked), we visited Vail. Note the sign as you enter the village. Unfortunately, we didn't see any moose in town, but we did see a weasel run into a store and then back
Not timid at all.
The mountain goats near Blue Lake #3 were amazing.
We also hike near Blue Lake (#3) south of Breckenridge.
