Robert's Story
Retirement is not very exciting, and I have little else to do except update this page again. Here goes... Linda (Payne, x '67) and I have been married for nearly forty-nine years (9/16/1967) and live currently in Queen Creek, AZ. We have two boys, John and Alan, who live in the Gilbert/Queen Creek area and continue to do their own thing. John is in the car business and happily doing well Alan works as a GIS programmer for a company in Scottsdale. I don't understand anything he does, but the company for which he works provides information to major airlines on airport landings and takeoffs.
I nearly lost Linda earlier this year (2016). She contacted a sometimes fatal lung disease called nocardia. After six months in the hospital, she was finally able to come home. She is God's miracle and is now doing quite well.
A little over three-and-a-half years ago, my daughter-in-law, Monica, and son, John, delivered two babies three months early. Unfortunately, the little boy did not survive. The little girl, Emma Lisa, weighed just 1 pound, 9 ounces. She has had two open heart surgeries. The long-term prognosis is very good. Other than the heart valve, she is very healthy. We like her an awful lot!! She is active and fiesty. She has already asserted her Type-A personality. I'm glad to have lived long enough to meet this beautiful little girl. Despite the protests of her mother (Marquette University), Emma Lisa is a Sun Devil in training.
I graduated from ASU in 1973 with a degree in Accounting. I finally got around to comipleting a MBA in 2002 from Azusa Pacific University.
In 1970, after four years in the Air Force, I began to work for the Postal Service. I intended to quit the Postal Service upon graduation from ASU, but the Postal Service kept promoting me - first, to Denver; then, to Pasadena, CA; then, to San Bernardino, CA; and finally, to San Diego. I retired in 2002 as a Controller. I am not responsible for the current sad state of the Postal Service. They were in much better shape when I retired.
In May, 2014, I retired from my second career as a Business Professor at Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa, CA. In June, ...Expand for more
2014, I "retired" as a part time instructor in the MBA program at the University of Redlands. My children bet I would not be retired long, and they were right. I taught briefly at the Chandler-Gilbert Community College, but now I am fully retired. I plan to sit in the swimming pool and watch those people foolish enough to walk in 110 degree temperatures hike along the banks of the beautiful Queen Creek.
Linda and I bought a house in Queen Creek (Nov., 2010) and moved back "home" to Arizona in June, 2014. Did Queen Creek even exist in 1964? After forty plus years of transfers and relocations as part of the U. S. Postal Service - none of which were in Arizona - completing the circle back to Arizona is quite surprising to us! At least I will finally be away from USC, Univ. of Nebraska, Colorado, and other obnoxious football fans who do not share my fondness for ASU. But have I moved too close to U of A?
In May, 2011, I took a "swan-dive" in front of one of my classes. I was placed on life support for several days and received a 5-way heart bypass. I recovered nicely and all the restrictions have finally been removed. I am now an advocate for "heart-healthy!" The doctors say I'm good for another 30 years, and I intend to enjoy every minute of it. Now, if I could only find a way to enjoy retirement...
After endless emails and facebook postings during this political season, I decided to launch a parady campaign for President of the United States. (Retirement does strange things to your decision-making process!) By now, you should be thoroughly bored with this update. As such, check out my website at bobotoole7.wixsite.com/mysite
Well...this update still sounds like something an Accountant would write. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. In the meantime, I don't know the policies for sharing contact information on this insidious site; but apparently one cannot share personal contact information. Please contact me and you can have all the information you can tolerate.
If I could, I would post a song by Marty Robbins - The Story of My Life. As it turns out, this song summarizes the 55-year marriage Linda and i had.
