Paul's Story

Life For years, speech communication study, competition, teaching and coaching occupied most of my life. I earned a B.A at UW-River Falls, an M.A. at the Univ. of Illinois, and a Ph.D. at the Univ. of MN, all in Speech Communication. The highlight of my competitive career in speech was a national championship in After Dinner Speaking in 1979. I sort of 'backed into' a speech coaching career when a job came open during the summer of 1981 at Tulane University in New Orleans. My spirit of adventure and the coaching credential led me to jobs at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA, Humboldt State University, Arcata, CA, Creighton University, Omaha, NE, and Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. Competitive travel led to travel through many states with stops at colleges and universities almost too numerous to recall. My most rewarding experiences in academe have almost all been associated with speech competition which attracts a solid 'crew' of dedicated professionals. The beauty of having lived coast-to-coast are the memories lived in often odd and unexpected ways. Better still, is the sense of permanence and belonging to a place when I finally returned home. New Orleans has a special place in my heart. Way back when, when I was raking hay on warm June mornings, I remember singing along with and becoming entranced by Arlo Guthrie's 'City of New Orleans.' Later, at graduate school at the University of Illinois, I learned Steve Goodman wrote the song when after riding the City of New Orleans from Chicago to New Orleans. The legend is that from time-to-time, he'd stay on the train rather than getting off at Champaign where he was enrolled at the Univ. of Illinois. To me, these were coincidences that were too great, so when an opportunity arose to teach at Tulane, I jumped at what was a very one-sided, lopsided contract, that not I'd not have accepted under any other circumstance. My year in the Crescent City was a roller coaster...Expand for more
of achievements and disappointments. I learned lots of lessons about working in academe very quickly. I thought I'd become the most popular guy ever around Mardi Gras time when my modest one bedroom apartment was filled to the rafters for weeks. And I had plenty of time to mull all the joys and frustrations, often sitting on the steps that descended into the Mississippi River across the levee from Cafe Du Monde. --- What I'd hope would become a career whereby I'd establish a home became just an extended time on the road. During the early 90s, I relocated back to the Twin Cities with big plans to recharge, refuel, pursue business ventures. What I'd hoped for didn't work out. What I found was much better. After a few years of misadventures, I met Kristin Peterson, truly the love of my life. We were married on 9/9/99 on a boat out of Prescott,WI. We set up a household with in Minneapolis with her pets Chloe and Otto, the cats, and Portia and Ursa, the Ridgeback canine sisters. Sadly, Otto departed to the great litter box in the sky before long and we lost Ursa a few years ago. Chloe and Portia remain loyal as ever. Kristen's conscientious and always competent work led to an offer of a two-year fellowship at the CDC in Atlanta beginning the fall of 2001. She was offered the job late in May. We rented our house, packed, and arrived in Atlanta on August 20th. Since the spirit of adventure had snared us, I cast a wide net for a teaching job beginning fall 2002. I was offered a year contract at the Univ. of Missouri in Columbia. This was the year of our commuting marriage and the heart did grow stronger. We sold the Minneapolis house to our renters and bought a house in St. Paul. For me, I'd finally returned all the way home. We'd planned a few 'touches' to make the house ready to suit our tastes. The minor adjustments have "flowered" into some serious remodeling. We continue to build on our dreams. Life's been a great adventure.
