Shortly after the suicides of 39 people associated with Marshall Applewhite, the Heaven's Gate Cult & Hale-Bopp were reported to have happened on the afternoon of Wednesday 26 March 1997 within the private community known as Rancho Santa Fe (San Diego County),my friend, Gayle Randall (Hays)offered to share an opportunity to make some seriously easy money with her. I jumped on it. The job was traffic control or Flag-women for a construction site. The road that was contracted for asphalt repair was located directly below the Heaven's Gate house of multiple suicides. She & I were to be the Flag-women on the road for the next couple of weekends. Our duties... (when requested) to stop all traffic when needed, no matter how expensive the car. As it turned out it was a HOT & thirsty job which worked out to be more challenging than I imagined! Getting rich folks to stop when & where you deemed fit (standing my ground in the middle of their path if that's what it took) without flinching as they approached with full determination not to be inconvenienced... all without an argument. Of course I burned even with frequent applications of sunscreen and Gayle tanned beautifully. The weird part was I couldn't keep myself from thinking and wondering if the spirits of those 39 souls were wandering, bewildered, about the grounds above me. Might they still be waiting to catch a ride on the comets tail? Perhaps, next time it graces our sky's, eh?
