Gia's Story

Life Hi all!!! Just had to let you know, I'm still alive and kicking!!! Thank You GOD and my neurosurgeon Anthony Virella!!! And all my "angels", mortal and immortal. I'll try to make it short, something was wrong with me, it started about 2 1/2 months ago, I started not being able to walk right, I was dragging my right leg. I thought I might have had a stroke. Saw a docter, after a cursory exam, he said maybe MS, maybe a stroke. Need an MRI, go home . Eventually I wasn't able to use the right side of my body at all . My hand was a closed fist that I had to pry open. I couldn't hold onto anything, write, feed myself, dress myself, shave my underarms, couldn't do zip!!! I'm right handed. Then I started falling down, I'd be standing up facing one direction, then next thing I know I'm 2 feet away flat on my face imbedded in a rose bush and cactus on the opposite side of the porch and I couldn't even help Rus lift me out. DEAD weight. I called it Spinning Out. I wasn't passing out, there was no warning dizziness etc, and except for the huge thorns ripping me up when Rus lifted me out i wasn't in pain and I had feeling in my right arm, hand, leg and foot, no numbness. Just useless. I "tripped" on a throwrug in the bedroom and hit 3 separate "bumpers" then smashed into the door with my face and head breaking my favorite glasses. the bathroom that has the hard floor not linoleum or carpet but ceramic tile I fell and smashed up this small antique table. The morning of the 9th I went out the front door, took 5 steps and fell again, this time hitting my head into this very heavy cast iron cream separator. Rus to the rescue!!! He had a job to go do that a.m. so after he threatens me once again with "duct taping my ass into a chair" so at least he wouldn't worry something will happen to me while he's gone, I promise not to do anything except sit still now that I'm starting to get scared too. After he left, I called my girlfriend and former neighbor Stacie ...Expand for more
(who by the way was born 6 hours after me). Earlier that week Rus and I dropped by Stacies for a visit, it had been a couple months since I'd seen her though we had talked on the phone she wasn't prepared to SEE me. So when I called and related my most recent falls to her she talked me into calling 911 and having an ambulance take me to Ventura County Medical Center and get checked out. 3 years ago her soulmate Roy was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor , talk about deja vu. BOOM, well oiled machine, cat scan, there's a mass on my left side of my frontal lobe. MRI, a very large softball size tumor. I had surgery Tuesday the 11th and home on the 15th. I got the staples removed today the 20th. I'm walking, talking, wiggling, jiggling. Well, so much for making it short!!! Remember the doctor that had "examined" me way back in February? I just got a reminder bill in case I'd forgot or misplaced the bill , $537.00.And I'm still waiting for them to schedule that MRI he mentioned 2 months ago too. NOT!! But I will see him in court!!! You can bet on that!! I lost a bit of hair, not so much from the surgery but after, I don't know, but I'd swear the nurses or someones had a contest to see who could tie up, tease, weave, crisscross and dreadlock and/or knot my hair the worst. I still haven't got all the dreads untangled, finally gave up on a knot that was tied like a necktie and after 6 hours cut it out. Oh well, it could have been a lot worse, just think, one eensy teensy slip of the knife....... And now, for your viewing pleasure, a few pictures of moi pre and post op, and home. I'm getting a copy of the scans and MRI photos of the my brain and the tumor itself (gonna frame it). I saw it, huge. Thank You from the bottom of my heart for your prayers go out to my human "angels" that I was able to call before I went into surgery (and you know who you are). I'll love you always... And be forever grateful. Take care of yourselves everybody!! Love, Gia
