Jeffrey's Story
I moved to the Pine Ridge Reservation in the fall of 2005 to start a Social Work Department at Oglala Lakota College. This was an opportunity I couldn't turn down - it is almost unheard of to be able to start a college department from scratch.
II took a job at Humboldt State University and taught there this last year. Now I'm moving to Laramie Wyoming where I own a house to see what working is like when it's untethered from earning money.
I earned a MSW in 1993 and a PhD in 2001, both from the University of Washington. I was 49 when I finally defended my dissertation. I've worked as a school bus driver, CETA Counselor, Estimator/Project Manager for an underground pipeline...Expand for more
construction company, group home worker, and all around vagabond (mostly the 70s).
I've hiked over half the Pacific Crest Trail and a fifth of the Continental Divide Trail. I spend as many weeks as I can each summer backpacking.
I'm still single, having been engaged twice to wonderful women, but neither led to legal union.
My brother Craig, who graduated in 1973, just disrobed from the Buddhist order at the Shasta Abbey. He was there for 20 years or so. My sister Marcy is married, lives in Bend Oregon, and retired at the end of April 2013. My Mom lives in Santa Rosa in the house the folks bought in 1968 - some things never change... My Dad died on Labor Day, 2009.
