Orville's Story
Life
I was born in the same town as Earnest Hemmingway not that it matters but some think itÂs kind of cool. Raised in the country without the company of a lot of friends my age I became somewhat of a bookworm at an early age and a great fan of science fiction. One thing lead to another and by the time I was in my mid teens I was deep into astronomy with a telescope of my own and the worldÂs most solitary hobby keeping me up all night long. Science contended with hormones for a young mans attention and for the most part the science won; evidenced by the fact that I attended neither my junior or senior proms in high school. IÂm sure there was a grateful mother or two somewhere who was happy that her daughterÂs virtue (?) remained intact while I was busy making a study of the moon and planets. College found me preparing to study physics as a precursor to my beloved astronomy only to be sidetracked by the wanderlust which strikes many when the opportunity to get involved in the grand adventure of a real shooting war presented itself, and so it was off to join the Marines for a period of four years. Adventure indeed did find me, and I came into my own as a man in many ways. Returning home I reentered school and drifted into business administra...Expand for more
tion as I had discovered the virtues of money by this time, as well as the ease with which having a slight surplus of it can help to enhance ones love life. Astronomy became my lifelong hobby, while adventure and business took up permanent residence in my soul. The next decade found me in business, married to my college sweetheart, then in politics (second youngest mayor ever elected in Illinois), and finally ski racing and off to Africa on my first safari. The marriage ended, then after a year and a half picked up again (proving you can never go home) then finally ended. During all this I authored or co-authored a number of papers in the journals of astronomy and had time to serve two terms as president of the Astronomical League. I learned to fly and bought my first airplane, owned or managed four different businesses and saw Africa four times with some of the most splendid companions God ever gave an adventurer. As to some insights by way of my likes and dislikes, I prefer Scotch to Bourbon and oysters to most other appetizers. I like my meat cooked medium rare and my vegetables steamed, and I detest men who donÂt say what they mean. While this goes nowhere near tying me up in a nice little package, I hope you have found it a good start.
