Ovon "Vonnie"'s Story
I always wanted to be a Mother when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a great idea. As it turns out, they were right.
I went to nursing school and became an RN and worked at Ben Taub Hospital for 10months until I married Donald Henderson (who graduated with us ) but I met him in college while taking a summer Civic class.
He went back to Baylor and continued Nursing School.
We married in 1966 and 4 years later had one son Jeff.
I have been a nurse since 1966 and have been a staff nurse a Head Nurse , house supervisor, education instructor , taught CPR worked ICU .
I also have worked in home health, been a Director of Nurses and now for the last 12 years have been a hospice nurse , which I feel is my spiritual calling and passion.
I am the mostly unknown sister of John C Ross, the redheaded class cut up and clown as well as a super nice guy.
My hobbies are working in my flower/rose garden and singing in my church choir. I am now writing a "Book" about my wonderful nursing career. The book and my career are not nearly finished.
I attend the Friendswood Friends Church which makes me a Quaker.
Working with people at the end of their life is not depressing but something that I feel is overlooked far too often.

t not end of life.
I have been in homes of the richest, senators, and homes that have had holes in the floor of a mobile home or falling down shack where all have been kind to me and shared their life's stories with me.
I have held the hands of the dying and prayed at the bedsides of those in my care, sung with the families, attended
too many Life Celebration services than I could ever count.
I have watched my best friend die of breast cancer and my "best friend Mother" die without me being at her side.
I have gone to weddings and visited with families after the death of a loved one. The hardest part of my job has been watching children and teenaagers with their whole life ahead of them die, and the unbelievable heart break that never leaves a parent who has lost a child. These have been my friends for life. I have kept in contact with them and they with me.
Lets face it we all will be leaving this earth the way we came, with nothing except the Lord and the legacy of what we have contributed to others in this life.
I am a happpy person and feel fulfilled in a way that I never imagined in High School.
Once I started Nursing School I knew that this was for me..and it has not disappointed me.
