Owen's Story

Since 1966 ------- US Navy -“ 6 years, Degree in Nuclear Engineering, Engineering supervisor for pressurized water reactor system (power and propulsion) for a fast attack (spy type) submarine. Most missions still classified but made an extended mission under the Arctic ice-cap, played baseball at the geographic North Pole and planted an Alaska State flag that was subsequently sent to the Governor. Married (Diane Rossi) and lived in Hawaii for four years before moving to California and pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in physics and alternative energy conversion systems. During this time also was in charge of the nuclear laboratory on campus and taught courses in nuclear engineering and nuclear plant operations. We had our first child, a daughter that absolutely changed our lives and is now a college professor and well published writer. Moved to Seattle area and worked on aerospace projects for several years specializing in advanced space-based power and propulsion systems. Became program leader for NASA contracts dealing with interplanetary space vehicle propulsion system. Tired of government program hassles (power and propulsion systems turned into weapons) and changed fields. Moved back to California and took a position as Chief Engineer for a company trying to develop impact attenuator systems capable of safely stopping errant vehicles in less than one-half second from 70 mph without hurting the vehicle occupants. Became a registered professional engineer (PE). Developed many new patented products and participated in the development of US and international standards for these types of devices. Also developed other types of highway safety products (electronic changeable message signs, portable and permanent highway barriers, breakaway features, seismic base-isolation products...Expand for more
for bridges and buildings, etc.). During this period we had our son, another life changing event and he now has a degree in Sound Engineering and is a Senior Sound Designer for Disney (Sound Engineer of the Year award for that industry in 2012). Managed numerous engineered product companies as a senior executive (Exec. VP/President/CEO/Director) dealing with transportation safety products, testing companies (personally supervised over 2500 full scale vehicle impact tests, from micro cars to semi-tractor/trailer rigs), seismic mitigation products, plastic molding and metal fabrication manufactures, etc. Societies included American Society of Nuclear Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, Institute of Traffic Engineers, Society of Automotive Engineers, National Academy of Science - Transportation Research Board (member and chair of several committees), Chair of the Transportation Safety Advisory Council, Vice-Chair of the International Road Federation, Chair of the International Subcommittee for Highway Safety Research, etc. Awards included California Governor's Award for most significant invention in 1985 and life-time achievement awards from the National Academy of Sciences-TRB (Stonnex Award) and from the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (Landen Award). Retired in 2009 as President and CEO of Lindsay Transportation Solutions. Moved to Pismo Beach, California to enjoy the mild coastal climate and half way between our children/grandchildren. Still doing some consulting in highway safety standards, product development, marketing programs, civil structural engineering and drainage in coastal communities and general company management. Also trying to learn how to play golf (year around here) since I never had time during my working days.
