Pam's Story

UPDATED - Back in Alabama (Foley, this time, near Gulf Shores) after 15 years! Can we say culture shock?! LOL! Still married to Riley, but moved here in hopes he could find work. Now both of us are unemployed, but we're hanging in there! Older: Moved to Alabama in September 1975, a year after graduation. Started work at Craig AFB in December and was there until the base closed in August 1977. I then transferred to Maxell AFB hospital, and later to Civil Engineering. Decided it was time for a promotion, went to work with the Logistics Management Center at Gunter AFS in 1981 and stayed there till I left in 1985. Due to a job opportunity falling through, I enjoyed a few months off, worked for Gayfers credit center for a while and finally took a job with the United Methodist Children's Home. Loved it until, after 10 years, I was told my salary had capped out! So, I went somewhere else and was miserable, so it was back to floundering. After 23 years in Alabama, I had the opportunity to move to Maryland. After thinking about it for 3 months, I took the chance, moved here in November 1998, and haven't regretted it. However, although I still love Maryland, I'm trying to convince my husband that moving to Colorado, Pensacola, Gulf Shores or Blue Ridge would be an excellent idea. =) After working four years for a small, privately owned company, it was sold to a major...Expand for more
corporation. Another two years and it stopped being fun in any way, shape or form. So, I took another job...2 days into it and I knew it wasn't for me...especially since the job I interviewed for and accepted, WASN'T the one they decided to give me!! So...I registered with an employment placement agency and temped for a year (I'm quite adept at floundering! =)). Went permanent with a great agency...IF you were in upper management...I wasn't. I'm now back with with the federal government and work at Ft. Meade. I'm glad to be back with DoD, but I so much prefer working for the Air Force. The Army is a whole 'nother animal! I recently married (April 2, 2008) for the first time! No, I didn't legally change my name - maybe someday, but not right now. There are just too many things to change. His name is Riley and he's the reason I moved to Maryland in 1998. I met him online...we became friends...he asked me to move...I said no the first few times, but he's far more stubborn than I am! LOL! Neither of us have kids (and we're not about to start now)...unless you count our 5 hyper cats (Veruca, Rough, Tumble, Bad Malcolm - aka Mugsy - and Lola Alice, who adopted us - RIP, Pepper and Sophie). So much for Riley not wanting a "houseful of cats"! He's adjusted well, though, and loves them as much as I do. Although sometimes I think human children would be much easier! =)
