Pam's Story

Life Greetings, The great news is that my son is doing so much better! He is now a magnet student in a magnet school in a general education class. He can read 300+ words, count by 1s,5's and 10's to 200+, write all the words can read, knows certain things from the Bible, can sing in tune and is very outgoing. He has come a long way and I am proud of him and all the providers that assisted him along his young life. He will be 6 in August 2007!! I now work in the field of Autism, running a support group, meeting with families and even met Doug Flutie 2 times this year. I advocate for money at the state level and am going to DC soon for a lot more money! I did real estate for the last 20 years, still have income property but my new focus is Autism. For the last 5 years I have enjoyed spending timw with my son, Michael. At age 2 he was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. He has many symptoms under the spectrum including Sensory Integration Disorder, Dysphasia, Tactile Defense, and many other things that he is overcoming. I knew at about 15 months when he had a language of 10 words and he regressed to 3 words, became withdrawn, flapped his hands, ran in circles, screached to communicate and became someone I had to get to know differently. He has been in many therapies over the last 3 years including Early Intervention. We tried Applied Behavioral Analysis ABA, Speech therapy, Occupational THerapy, Feeding Therapy, lots of sensory diet exploration and gluten free casien free GFCF diet for a time. He had such severe texture issues with food he never graduated to stage 3 babyfood. He entered the school system on stage 2 babyfood at 2.9 years of age. He attended a special needs classroom just for children with Autism. He attended the class for about 2+ years where he was integrated into a regular preschool classroom 1/2 day toward the end. He is now in a general ed classroom with some therapies still in place. He is doing well now. H...Expand for more
e still has eating issues and perhaps OCD issues which I monitor and redirect his attention quite often. My new ministry is to advocate for children with Autism and their families. It is overwhelming to say the least. You have to battle every system in place-beginning with insurance to pediatricians, school and alternative education systems wich is ongoing. IEP's, No Child Left Behind Act, the IDEA, Disability Law, Department of Mental Retardation, advocates and attorneys and then you have time for life! I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has a child with Autism, a family member, friend, caretaker of a child(ren) with ASD. I run a support group and like to discover the latest through referrals. The therapies are so controversial, but there is no cookie cutter of Autism-all children suffer differently. Thus all therapies work differently. I am grateful to God that the right combination of therapies, diagnosis, diet and medications worked to the benefit of this gift from God-a child of God. He is such a joy, fun to be with, Love, talk to, play with, teach to, learn with, share with, love, care for, adore, laugh with. love, watch, listen to, did I mention LOVE???? Please let me know your experiences with Autism. Here are some facts: Autism affects 1:150 nationwide 1:122 are affected with Autism in Massachusetts 75% of children diagnosed are boys The 25% of girls diagnosed get affected much harder In the United States over 1.7 million individuals live with Autism, making it more prevelant than Down Syndrome, childhood diabetes and childhood cancer combined!
