Pamela's Story

Hmm, how does one sum up nearly 30 years in a small space? After high school, I decided against further secretarial education, and worked as a secretary at various companies for 4 years. I did contemplate veterinary technician school, but unfortunately wasn't able to follow through at that time. During most of those years, I was in a relationship and engaged to someone, but ultimately realized that wasn't something I wanted to make permanent after all. We remain good friends, however, after all these years. In February, 1983, I met my husband Bill on a blind date, of all things, (yes, they do work!) while he was home on leave from the Marine Corps. We were married on New Year's Eve, 1983, after months of writing and 3 weeks together in October (how's that for a quickie courtship?) We moved to North Carolina shortly afterward. Our first child, Jason William, was born October 16, 1984. Complications with the birth (which I will forever blame on the naval hospital) ensured that we would never have more biological children. Almost immediately, we started the adoption process, and after waiting a couple of years because we weren't old enough to adopt, and moving back to Minnesota, our daugher arrived in July, 1987 at the age of 4 months. Kristen Jeanette Lee was born March 4, 1987 in Taegu, South Korea. We lived in a purchased tincan mobile home in Vadnais Heights for a few years, and bought our first house in St. Paul in '87, on Norton Street, where we lived for 10 years. I did home daycare during that time, while raising our own kids. Our kids attended St. Bernard's Grade School through 4th and 6th grades. We ultimately decided that moving out of the city was in the best interests of our kids, so we moved in 1997. Goodbye, North End .... hello, Lakes Area. We bought a 20 acre hobby farm in...Expand for more
Shafer Township (near Taylors Falls) in '97, with a huge old farmhouse. That was and is our dream home ... even though it'll never look like a House Beautiful magazine feature ... and we don't care. We have sheep, goats, chickens, as well as a dog and cats. We grow hay to sell, and I have large gardens. Nothing like riding on a haywagon on a beautiful summer evening ... I've worked part-time at Chisago Lakes High School for the past 11 years, as "The Breakfast Lady" ... I run the school breakfast program there, and my hours are great. It leaves me plenty of time for my real passions of cats, writing, artistry, and gardening. I'm a longtime volunteer on the best online pet community on the internet (PetHobbyist.com), and write a weekly newsletter for the cat area there. Hubby works for Andersen Corp. in the supervisory field. We have 12 indoor cats, and usually a few 'spares;' we are involved with both Persian Rescue and independent cat rescue, mostly special needs and senior cats. I have a side businesses in jewelry making, which I never have enough time for. I'm currently writing my first book (sorry,, folks, not the Great American Novel ... yet .... but personal experiences with feline long-term illnesses). We don't do much for entertainment other than going out to eat, and visiting with friends and family, fishing, and just hanging out together. You may see us at the St. Croix Casino in Turtle Lake, WI, playing penny slot machines on occasion though. ;) Our 'kids' are 22 and 24 now and are healthy and doing well. No grandkids yet. Bill and I celebrated our 25th anniversary this past year, and the simple things in life make us happy. Life is good. ;) If anyone is ever in the Taylors Falls area, and would like to get together for lunch or a drink, let me know! ~ Pamela
