Pamela's Story

Check my Public Notes for updates. If you did not/do not know me, please do not friend request me. I'm here for old Army, Air Force and High School friends. This is merely a contact point, and I am not available. I left Santana in 1978, one year early. I earned my GED and entered the Army Reserve in October 1978. After returning home I decided to go active duty and joined the Air Force in May 1979. While in the AF I went to the D.L.I.F.L.C. for language training in Korean. I ended up at March AFB as a Graphics Specialist. I left the AF in July 1981. I worked as a Paste-up Lay-out Artist for a local magazine for a short time. I gave birth to my first child, Christopher in 1982. I met my husband Stephen in 1983. Stephen Jr. was born in 1985, and Stephen Sr. and I were married in 1986. We have two more children now, Erin was born in 1988 and Brian in 1993. I stayed home full-time for 19 years to raise my kids, and then worked part-time during school hours. After my husbands 2003 stroke I was forced to work full-time outside the home as he can no longer work. Yes, life throws you curves. I finally quit retail in 07 and began working for the school district again, Campus Security Substitute. It was the perfect job for me, I LOVE working with teenagers; yeah, I'm crazy like that! It had perfect hours and vacations, it gave me the time with my family that we needed. I didn't care that it was part time and we were broke again, my family had been falling apart without me there. Later on I picked up several permanent school positions. I had THEE most wonderful job in summer of 2008; I worked at a Boy Scout camp. I was the Outpost Director. When a mountain lion with cubs moved into Lower Meadows where my camp was, my outpost overnighters were shut down for the last two weeks; so then I was asked for by the Wrangler. Yay! I got to wrangle horses for the last 12 days. IT WAS AWESOME! I was asked to come back next summer. I continued working as campus security and did another summer at Boy Scout summer camp as a camp commissioner, but at a different camp as a prior outpost director regained his health and came back to the other camp. I've retired now, as of July 2010. It's a medical retirement for PTSD. Courtesy of Military Rape. I stuffed the agony down hard and deep for over 30 years, suffering breakdowns every 6 to 10 years. The last breakdown/relapse was the worst, I nearly died a few times in the six years of it; so I tried one more time to fight the VA for this status. I won. My two doctors really went to bat for me and I thank God for them. I may be in therapy...Expand for more
for the rest of my life, but at least I will HAVE a life. My life took another interesting twist when my husband and I amicably and permanently separated in early 2012 after a decision made over a year prior in 2011; we had both waited for our youngest to attain the age of 18. It was something that had been coming for over a decade, we tried but it was over. Funny how you become better friends when you don't have to live together anymore. In February 2013 I committed to my best friend Chis for life. I never saw that coming; strangely Steve did and blessed the union several months before it was a union. I remember laughing at him when he did and saying, no, I'm not anywhere ready for that kind of thing. Chris and I are incredibly happy in Love, and Steve and my kids are happy for us. Well, my oldest son Chris has not met him yet, he's reserving comment until then. How did this happen you ask? Chris and I had met way back in 1979 at the D.L.I.F.L.C., the language school in Monterey, CA. I was taking Korean and he was taking Chinese. He had been one of my boyfriends. He asked me to marry him. Twice. Both times I said no, that I was young and just not ready for that sort of thing yet. I hurt him, but he never forgot me or stopped loving me. He found me here on Classmates back when they had military pages. I had added myself to a few groups, Ft Jackson, D.L.I.F.L.C., and March AFB. He didn't write me for a long time because he saw that I was married, (Steve and I were waiting for our last child to reach 18 before we separated), but he finally sent me a Birthday note. His company moved him to San Diego for a year and a half as an experiment, and we fished and hiked and backpacked; we had a blast! But things are never static are they? He felt the need to move back to San Antonio when his parents became ill and I supported him in that. We loved and lived apart for 2.5 years and there were times it was hell; I honestly do not know how military husbands and wives manage this, it's agony to be apart. We managed as many flights back and forth as we could. Now we are together again, the plan is traveling the U.S. half the year in our Airstream, and doing winters in San Diego/San Antonio. The price of gas makes this tricky, we shall probably park in really excellent parks for a couple months at a time, kayaking, backpacking, fishing, hiking, and getting to know every piece of the park while we save enough for the next adventure. This first year is about visiting family, fixing this and that, working out kinks. I tell you, the second half of life is so damned exciting!
