Pamela's Story
In high school, I wanted to be a veterinarian, but I followed the recommendations of that damned ASVAB test and instead studied Engineering at UW (BS) and Purdue (MS). The first part of my career was as a GIS Specialist (Geographic Information Systems), which took me to Maine, Cape Cod MA, North Carolina (there were two other KW grads living in the area where I was!), and then to New Hampshire. We have lived in Alton Bay, NH since 2001, which is a seasonal community on Lake Winnipesaukee. We live on a small farm in the "mountains".
After having my first son in 2003, I took almost a year off and then went back to work in my local school district here in Alton. I am both an IT Director and an educational administrator in our small community. I love being in educational management and am pursuing certification in educational leadership. This is a really small town - our entire school district is smaller than our high school was!
We have two boys, ages 4 & 2. My husband, Andy, is an oceanographic research engineer at Univ of NH. We live on a small, organic farm with two ponies, two llamas (of course), and two alpacas. We have a very old house (c1770) which we are renovating very slowly. Since we spend all of our time and money on our farm, we don't trav...Expand for more
el much, go out, or even have a TV, but we do watch a lot of NetFlix movies and do weekend activities with our boys.
New Hampshire is very hilly and forested, with a lot of lakes and wetlands - very different than Wyoming! We are fortunate to live in a somewhat remote area, where we can enjoy the outdoors; on the flip side, it's 45 minutes to anywhere with shopping. In the winter, we have up to 4 ft. of snow on the ground; in the spring, the blackflies carry us away; in the summer, it's wicked humid and very green, and we swim at a nice little lake about a mile down the road; and in the fall, it's crisp, clear, and we have gorgeous foliage. I really do miss Wyoming weather and the low humidity; I even miss the wind.
My most memorable summer was working on The Nature Conservancy's Red Canyon Ranch near Lander, WY in 2004 (its first summer of operation).
Although I have lived all over the US, I have not traveled outside the country, except to Canada. I miss Wyoming and hope to someday move back West. As I write this in May, 2008, I haven't been home in almost 4 years and we are excited to bring our boys home to see the ranch this summer. They are very anxious to see prairie dogs and rattlesnakes.
