Pamela's Story
Well, I've lived in Houston for nearly 12 years now, since 1998 when I moved from CA after 9 years there because my daughter Julia, son-in-law Joe, and most importantly my first grandson, Nick, who was 3 at the time (now almost 15)moved here. Eric was born in 2000, the only Texan in the family. We live very near one another, 3/4 mile, and see one another not daily but nearly so. We do lots of exciting things and have a reservation at the BOTTOM of the Grand Canyon, Phantom Ranch, next July 6. Would you believe that they get 10,000 calls in 3 hours with people trying to make reservations for the following year? I was in Atlanta last July 1 and spent a couple of hours redialing and being on...Expand for more
hold before I finally secured the reservation for 2010. The two previous months I didn't even make a connection until the reservations were all taken.
I teach English and am Department Chair at a high school in a Hispanic/low socio-economic area 8 miles from home. Houston has everything (including heat, humidity, and hurricanes) and is a fine place to live except for when the hurricane or its aftermath is a reality; then it is ugly. We cheer on the Astros, Rockets, and the Dynamos but could not care less about the Texans; sorry football fans.
I participate in 2 book clubs and a film discussion group as well as a number of professinal organizations. It's a busy and fulfilling life.
