Pamelyn's Story
After graduating from college in 1967 with a degree in English lit, I taught elementary school on the Westside of Chicago and got involved with the Chicago Teachers Union. I was the school's delegate, a member of various committees, a district supervisor, and a member of the CTU executive board.
In 1975, I was hired by the CTU as a field representative, someone who represents members in the schools (I had the north side, including Mather) in grievance hearings, conducts school meetings to keep members informed, deals with principals and board administrators.
In 1982, I became the CTU's newspaper editor. I wrote all the articles, took all the photographs, and prepared the dummy layouts for printing. I became the communications director two years later. In that capacity, I condinued my editor's duties but handled public relations as well.
In 1985, I was elected to one of the five full-time officers' positions, recording secretary. Until we hired a new editor, I continued all my responsibilities but now I was a member of the negotiating team. After about six months, I was able to hand over the editor's job to a new hiree but, as reco...Expand for more
rding secretary, I was the executive editor and now was responsible for all internal membership and external public communications. I wrote all member letters over the presidents' signatures and created and served as the CTU representative in a new mediation process, which was developed to solve problems without the use of outside arbitrators.
Besides negotiating the contracts from 1985 to 2001, I wrote most of the articles in the contract and was the person in charge of getting contracts printed and delivered to the 33,000 members.
I retired in 2001 when a new regime took over the CTU. When they lost the next election in 2004, the new officers asked me to come back to work, on a consulting basis, as the CTU lobbyist in Springfield, a job my late husband had held from 1975 to 2001. Between 2004 and 2008, my efforts in Springfield kept new privitization attempts from being enacted and saved retired teachers' from reductions in their pensions and insurance rebates.
I am happily retired now and spend my days redoing various rooms in my house, taking classes, doting on my two grandchildren, and enjoying life with my family and friends.
