Michelle's Story
Life
What could be that interesting? Traveled the US and Scotland since graduation, have settled now 40mi N of Kansas City. Several exciting years as magazine publisher, a few as deputy sheriff in Riverside County (a family thing!), 2 years in Atlantic City for Wayne Newton's people (the big time, danke schoen! lol), and freelance newspaper reporting and photography. Then I started a business providing desktop publishing/computer consulting in Orange/Riverside counties. Took it to Michigan, where I specialized in databases. (I was also the first female firefighter in that town - who'da guessed?) Received offer from a database reporting software company, so we moved to Atlanta. Another former classmate, Linda Gorrell, is a headhunter in Atlanta, and she got me the job! I was an instructor/consultant for them traveling 50 wks/year. We were in Atlanta for 1996 Olympics: got to see gold medal women's gymnastics-experience of a lifetime! Returned to California in fall '96 to care for my mother until she died; travel was difficult for her last 6 months so I went back into business for myself...Expand for more
. Still lots of travel, but only 2 wks/mo. When that was all over, accepted permanent offer from one of my clients in KC to design/manage data warehouse reporting system. Recently moved across the street (literally) to a new telecommunications startup to do the same thing. My two kids are all grown up - daughter 25 and son 24, and I have a 4-yr-old granddaughter. Gave up the farm in the country to move to Florida - working in Daytona Beach as a Data Center manager/programmer, and living in a small town north of Daytona...Ormond by the Sea. Walk to the beach every night, and it's such a casual place I can wear shorts and a ballcap to work - just how I envisioned my "pre-retirement" years. That's the story in a nutshell, for what it's worth.
Wow - I haven't signed in here for a couple of years and this is pretty out of date...surprisingly, I'm back in California. Still working hard...can still wear shorts to work, but it's not quite the same when you don't live at the beach!
So here in 2008 - single for 5 years, living close to my family, figuring out what the "golden years" will bring.
