Pat's Story
Life
Two weeks after graduating from OHS I was in the U.S. Navy. I volunteered for submarine duty and served 2-1/2 years aboard the USS Thornback SS-418 home ported in Key West and later Charleston. Made two trips across the Atlantic to Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Italy, Greece and Turkey. The highlight of my Navy service was being nominated to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, but I failed the entrance exam, probably due to skipping too many classes at OHS. I discharged from the Navy in 1960 as a machinist second class (E5), attended linotype school in NY and became a printer (served my apprenticeship at the Ocala Star-Banner), married Virginia Sims in 1964, had one son, Ty, in 1966. TN, IL, and returned to FL in 1969 to work for the St. Petersburg Times. Retired from that paper as production manager in 1995. We moved back to Ocala and built a home located between Ocala and Dunnellon. We are now enjoying the retired lifestyle. I spend my time bass fishing, gardening (I set out 100 dogwood trees and 100 azaleas on our one-acre lot), and learning the computer. We don't travel much, mostly staying home, tinkering in my workshop and playing with our German Shepard Dog. I'm still in touch with old Navy buddies, old friends from work and buddies from OHS. Life is good and Ocala was a great place to grow up. Send me an e-mail anytime. I have a scanner and enjoy sharing pictures.
