Patricia's Story
Life
Single Parent of 2 daughters - Allison 31 & Jodie 29. Three grandchildren, Kaena 12, Makanala'i 8 & Pumehana 5. Living in Aiea. My oldest daugher Allison & grandson Kaena live in Pearl City and my youngest daughter Jodie and her family live in Hurricane, Utah.
Took an early retirement from Bank of Hawaii after 30 years in 2003 to assist in caregiving for aging parents. After a year, it was time to return to the workforce. Didn't have the luxury of staying semi-retired. Currently semi-retired again. Used to work for an air-conditioning duct system cleaning company called AirCare Environmental Services where I was the Office Administator amongst other things.
Last year, during the month of May 2007. I took a month long vacation with my boyfriend Douglas (now fiancee since December 2007-got a diamond ring for Christmas -it was an unexpected SURPRISE and a BIG one at that! If you know what I mean.) Doug took me on my first European trip to Italy for 23 days. LOVED IT! I got 700 pictures to prove it! Can't wait to go back. Visted Venice, Bolzano, Verona, Florence, Milan, Cinca Terra's, Sienna & Rome. Rome was our last leg of our vacation and we got to see the Pope.
I spent a week in Palm Springs before returning home to Honolulu on June 3, 2007. The picture I've posted was taken in Palm Springs at a great Italian restaurant in the Palm Desert area.
I've gotten the bug and want to take a European trip yearly or maybe every other year. Doug wants to go to France in 2009 and my passport's good for 10 years. Might as well make the most of it while we're still young (at heart, hehehe!!)
For now, Doug lives in Palm Springs. Works as a nurse in the intensive care unit at the Desert Regional Medical Center. We are currently in the stage of our lives where we have aging parents. Unfortunately, his mom ...Expand for more
Betty has a home in Yucca Valley, CA which is unoccupied at present. Since January 2008, Betty is currently living in the Catherdal City area and is under hospice care. She has parkinson's disease and was one of the reasons Doug left Hawaii. Betty had her first fall while I was visiting Doug last year 2007 for Christmas. She had a series of falls after that at the care home; however, in April 2008, a serious fall resulted in her having hip surgery. Because she refused physical therapy, she is crippled from the waist down. It pains Doug to see his mom that way.
Exercise 3-4 times a week (try really hard to keep it up and sometimes I get off track, way off for about a month or so!) . When I get a chance, I spend time with my girlfriends. We do the girl thing, window shopping, going out to the movies, having a bite to eat for lunch or dinner or just hanging out at their houses. Go to the Elk's Club ever so often since one of them has the membership; however because I'm there so often, they don't realize I'm not the member, just a guest!
My oldest daughter Allison, is also a single parent. I get to see my grandson every other week.
I'm the oldest of 9 children. My siblings all live on the mainland, 4 brothers & 3 sisters. I'm the only one here in Hawaii. We lost my brother Wesley over 20 years ago. Miss him.
In April 2008, we moved my mom Mary back to Hawaii. She was living with my sister Cathy in Pleasanton, CA. Regretfully, we had to place her into a care home because of the level of care she needed.
Trust me. Its never easy when you have to make a lifelong decision when it comes to the welfare of your parents.
My dad passed away in December 2004 at the age of 79. Miss him as well.
Still keep in touch with quite a few of our classmates via email and in person.
