Pat's Story
Life
My Pets
I have three Shelties, an 11-year-old sable named Casey, a 8 year- old blue merle named Berkley, and a 2 year old blue merle named Peri. They are terrific pets.
My Kids
My 48 year-old son was career Navy - a specialist in aircraft electronics. He graduated from Embry Riddle University with a degree in aeronautical engineering and retired as a Navy Chief in 2010. Greg has been in every war or conflict in the Middle East, which was very nerve wracking! Now, Greg is a defense contract manager for the government and lives in Pensacola, FL I have the absolute cutest, brightest 21-year-old granddaughter...a blonde who rides horses like her grandmother and is a junior majoring in non-profit management.
My Job
Retired as President and CEO of Special Olympics Maryland. Currently dabble in real estate investments.
After being divorced and living by myself for 14 years, I took a big step and acquired a significant other....Denny Poorman, Class of '67. We briefly dated in high school and then after 35 years, reconnected through Classmates.com!
College
Bachelor's in Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in 1975 at Montclair State College in Montclair, NJ....Expand for more
Master's in Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in 1976 at Montclair State College in Montclair, NJ
Ph.D. in Kinesiological Sciences at University of Maryland in 1979.
Workplace
Thinking that I had reached my goal of being a University Professor and doing research, I realized that something was missing. I had volunteered with the local Special Olympics program in New Jersey while an undergraduate. I rejoined them at the International level in 1985. But after spending 7 years travelling around the world with Special Olympics Inc as Director of Education, I decided I needed to get my life back and took the President/CEO position with Special Olympics Maryland in 1992. My years there at the helm were wonderful. We moved into a leadership position worldwide with our innovative programs in Maryland. It also allowed me to spend more time with friends and family. I retired in 2012.
Running a program like Special Olympics is the most rewarding thing I have ever done. The impact on so many lives and the opportunity to make life better for not only our athletes with disabilities, but their families, coaches and volunteers is what made me get up in the morning.
