Patricia's Story

Life The first few years out of high school I didn't do a whole lot with my life. In June of 1996 I married Kevin Tyler and moved to Germany. He is in the U.S. Army. We had been best friends for years and joked that if we were ever single at the same time we would get married! A little over nine months later we had our first child. Drake is now 15 years old and learning how to drive :0 His little sister Kierstyn is 12, and I am also raising my stepson Cody who will be 17 this year. We have been living in Smyrna, TN about 30 minutes south of Nashville, TN for almost 2 years. In the past 16 years we have lived in 9 different houses in five different states and one foreign country. This has given us the opportunity to visit 38 different states so far. With this move, we bought our first home. With one child in high school and another almost there we decided to provide them some stability. Their dad may get orders to move, but the family will not move until the boys have graduated from high school. I finally decided to finish my degree and went back to college. Due to the frequent moves I decided to go the University of Phoenix online. Going to school online has some challenges (like when the power goes out in the middle of typing a paper :( I switched my career path from accounting to elementary education - I guess you could say that was my mid-life crisis ;) I completed my student teaching in April 2011, graduated in May, and received my te...Expand for more
aching certificate in November. I was fortunate to complete my student teaching at my daughter's school, Thurman Francis Arts Academy. This is a unique school because they have traditional students who are zoned for the school and magnet students who have applied and been accepted based on grades and test scores (they have to provide their own transportation). They serve kindergarten through fifth grade in both the traditional and magnet setting but only magnet students in sixth through eighth grade. Every student in the school benefits from the magnet program, they all attend the related arts courses to include an arts class, dance, music, technology, Spanish, and PE. The school also has a fantastic band and strings program for fourth through eighth grade. My children keep me very busy with their scouts and various sporting activities. They've even talked my into coaching soccer (twice), cheerleading, boys basketball, and softball. I love my kids and I love the fact they want me to coach their sports teams, even if they have never seen me play the sport (anyone who had PE with me I'm sure remembers my lack of basketball skills). I guess it is a good thing I grew up with a sports nut and then married one because I know the fundamentals of just about every sport :) I am looking forward to coming home in July (2012). But I am also a little bummed we will not be having a class reunion. Maybe I will see some of you at the All Class Picnic :)
