Greetings Class of '69 classmates! Since 1984 I've been living & working in Gallup New Mexico, a border town on the edge of the Navajo Nation. I am a university professor whose passions are participatory action research and social activism. I helped start a graduate center here which offers a half dozen masters programs primarily in education and counseling. The Gallup Graduate Studies Center is an extended campus of Western New Mexico University. New Mexico is really a magnificent place where the wide open spaces are still wide open, dry, and breath-taking. As we say in New Mexico, we have plenty of beach but no water. I came to Gallup with my husband Cal Marshall, a Jacksonville guy who graduated from Dupont about 1961-ish. Cal's a trauma nurse at the Gallup Indian Medical Center, run by the Indian Health Service section of the US Public Health Service. It's part of the US government's treaty obligations to provide health care to Native Americans. We were also in Sitka Alaska with the Tlingit and Haida tribes. Side bar: Cal and I met at Florida State when I was doing a masters in Counseling and he and few other guys had started an alternative school for drops outs in the mid 1970's.
