Patricia's Story

Greetings Class of '69 classmates! Since 1984 I've been living & working in Gallup New Mexico, a border town on the edge of the Navajo Nation. I am a university professor whose passions are participatory action research and social activism. I helped start a graduate center here which offers a half dozen masters programs primarily in education and counseling. The Gallup Graduate Studies Center is an extended campus of Western New Mexico University. New Mexico is really a magnificent place where the wide open spaces are still wide open, dry, and breath-taking. As we say in New Mexico, we have plenty of beach but no water. I came to Gallup with my husband Cal Marshall, a Jacksonville guy who graduated from Dupont about 1961-ish. Cal's a trauma nurse at the Gallup Indian Medical Center, run by the Indian Health Service section of the US Public Health Service. It's part of the US government's treaty obligations to provide health care to Native Americans. We were also in Sitka Alaska with the Tlingit and Haida tribes. Side bar: Cal and I met at Florida State when I was doing a masters in Counseling and he and few other guys had started an alternative school for drops outs in the mid 1970's. I did an internship at the then small school. They needed a woman to help chaperone a camping-canoe trip fo...Expand for more
r the kids, and I ended up in Cal's canoe. I did my undergraduate work at Florida where I roomed with Nordi Sternberg and then we were apartment mates with Terri Rogero and Rhoda Puleo. While Cal is a Seminole, I am both a Gator and a Seminole which makes cheering at a Florida-FSU game a winning venture. I did my doctorate at the Center for International Ed at UMASS-Amherst. Cal and I were Peace Corps Volunteers in Jamaica 1977-79; then I did training for Peace Corps and other international development agencies for about 9 years -mostly west Africa and stateside. Stopped the traveling consultant life when I was 8 months pregnant with our first daughter. Our oldest daughter Molly graduates next week from University of New Mexico, then heads out to be a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ecuador June 15th.Our youngest daughter Megan is a freshman at Whittier College in southern California where she's on the womens swim team. (Yes, Richard Nixon was a Whittier grad - it's an old Quaker school - where he must have failed ethics.) I look forward to catching up on your lives and dreams as we each approach 60! I haven't been back to Jacksonville Beach in about 4 years, so it will be a real treat if I can come to the reunion. Thank you to the reunion organizing committee for getting this going. Pat Maguire
