Patricia Patricia Markey-Dow:

CLASS OF 1974
Palo alto, CA

Patricia's Story

In 1974 I moved to Chico for school. Graduated in Recreation Administration with a Therapeutic Emphasis. Worked with special populations for many years. Married my college sweetheart in 1979 and started having babies when we were 27 years old. Chip and I have been married ever since, and the kids are now 24, 22 and 21. Our first born, Christopher Bradley who by the way was also fondly named after Christopher Newbury class of '74, and one of my best girlfriends brother, Bradley Mills, who passed away recently. Christopher Bradley just graduated Chico State in Science and will be getting his masters in Science, along with a possible teachers credential. He is quite the athlete, always has been, and still is involved in baseball and rugby. He continues to live in Chico, and we hear from him alot. Michael John was born 14 months later, and he too is in college at Chico State. He will be graduating in Math May '09, then wants to get his teaching credential. He has a fiance, Felisha, and the long engagement continues. She just graduated Chico State in Business Ag. Michael has also put himself through college, is a very hard worker, and of gentle heart. Our daughter is 21 now, married to a wonderful man by the name of Rich Minnich, and both are serving our country in the Air Force. They live in Abilene Texas, and are stationed at Dyess Air Force base in Abilene. We only get to see them 2 or 3 times a year, unfortunately, but here from them often. I went back to school in 1995 and received a Masters in Social Work. I have since been licensed for awhile, and also have a Registered Play Therapy-Supervisor credential. I work PT at a rural health clinic in the behavioral health department, and I have a PT private practice in Paradise, Ca where we also live as empty nesters. As a young family we tried to explore all the western states, and Canada by tent trailer. We put in over 50K as they were growing up. It all stopped when we officially put all the kids in ball, and our summers were consumed by games. I then had internships in grad school in the summer, and for the first time, I worked FT (I was basically a stay at home mom) when my oldest was age 16. We pride ourselves in that accomplishment, lived on a very very strict budget, and gave our children a wonderful, adventurous lifestyle. All of our kids were very involved in boy and girl scouts, and just about any sport around. We did not allow video games/computer games much, and TV was limited to 3 or 4 channels. dren to read, be creative and play outdoors alot, which we did as a family. They were all with a very strong work ethic, and had jobs by the time they were early teens and knew how to run a household. I moved to Korea by myself in 1993 for 3 monhs to teach English, while Chip stayed home with the kids. It was a very wonderful experience for both of us, made the marriage even stronger, and taught the kids that Dad can be a Mom as well. I was born on a Thursday so I am a child who has far to go, but cant say I have been anywhere but the US, Canada, and Korea. My dream is to study and experience how others praise and honor their concept of a higher power. My God is Buddhist, Native American and Catholic, and we have had quite a journey together, particularly since 1989. I relish in the simplest of things, such as family and gatherings of friends. I love natural beauty, and dont need material things to fulfill my soul. I like comfort, but dont need opulence. I dont hate, I mourn for those that do. I have lost many friends and family members, as I was born to a very old family. The disease of alcholism has taken many a Markey, with the latest being my beloved sister Linda. Chip and I really started 'growing up' in 1989, and have lived a different lifestyle ever since. It proved to be a very strong foundation for my purpose in life: raising my children that God gave me. Now, at 52 what was given to me, I am trying to let go. This empty nest thing kills my heart at times, I am not very graceful at it. The best thing that has come of being on classmates.com, is to renew my friendship with Leslie Mills. I have had one email from Chris Newbury, and conitnue to look for Julie Demers, and am curious about Jim Harvey. As the head letter girl and cheerleader of our school back in the day, I look at those years and smile at the good times. I was never one of 'the cool-hip' kids, but found out later in life that none of that matters anyway. I love being a social worker, listen very well, and try to give suggestions to my patients/clients that may improve their lives. I have been through many a storm in life, and still survive. My experience, strength and hope to carry the message of hope is my calling. I have many a character defect to still pray about and give to God, but, I do my best, one day at a time. Hope all who read this learn a bit about Patricia Markey-Dow who is, otherwise known as Patty Markey. Dont have a clue as to why I am Patricia Patricia Markey-Dow on this classmates thing.
