Patricia's Story

Life After two years in Connecticut, I returned to the place I've always felt most at home: The San Francsisco Bay Area, in October 2011. I'm now living in Hayward with my 2 cats, Spooky & Geoffrey, ages 9.5 & 9 y.o, respectively, & I'm planning to move to Berkeley this fall. I've become active once again at Holy Spirit Parish / Newman Hall, where I was baptized, confirmed & received first Eucharist nearly 37 years earlier. I'm trying to devote myself to writing full-time in the areas of theology and spirituality. I have a blog, radicalcatholicmusings, that I update every few days. I LOVE being back in the SF Bay Area!!! It really is home, & I realize that I was a bit foolish not to move back sooner. But there were good reasons to stay back in New England, all of which are named "family." In September 2009, I had moved back to my home city of Hartford, Connecticut, where I retired on Social Security Disability. I remained in CT to be near my mother; when she died in January 2011, I decided to move back to the Bay Area. Prior to moving back to Hartford, I spent 23 years in graduate study and working in the Boston area and nearly 14 years in the San Francisco Bay Area where I both studied and taught theology. I received my Master's degree in Systematic Theology, specializing in Feminist and Liberation Theology. I'm still politically progressive, focusing most of my activism now in areas concerned with animals, the environment, disability rights, rights of lesbian / gay / bisexual / transgendered persons, and peace and justice. After 15 years at Harvard University, I accepted a new position in early December 2002 in the Division of Women's Health / Connors Center for Women's Health and Gender Biology at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA. I worked there until early March 2009, when the bad economy resulted in my being laid off. In my non-work time, I taught and occasionally preached in the progressive Catholic community in Boston to which I b...Expand for more
elonged and where I was also involved in worship, pastoral care, reconcilia-tion, and leadership. Now that I have time, I've begun to develop several courses for adults in theology and Scripture -- courses I've long wanted to teach in subjects people have told me they've long wanted to learn. When I have time to enjoy being home, I continue the passion I developed in graduate school for cooking and baking, although now everything I make must be gluten-free; and I continue my life-long passions: reading -- these days, mostly theology, religious and monastic history, Benedictine spirituality, and studies of the history and long-term impact of the 1960's and early '70's peace movement, and, for a break, mystery novels (favorite authors being Julia Spencer-Fleming, Marcia Muller, and Val McDermid); listening to folk music (still), especially Joan Baez, Holly Near, and Cris Williamson; and cheering on the World Champion Boston Red Sox. I've also begun two long-term writing projects. Within the past several years, I've had to adjust to living with the intertwined disabilities of severe osteoporosis and resultant fractures, and chronic pain. The adjustment became considerably easier when, in March 2004, I acquired a bright red electric scooter which has provided me with a great deal of mobility. Now I'm using an electric wheelchair that goes faster than the scooter. I share my home with two wonderful, very amusing cats, Spooky, a silver tabby, and his younger brother Geoffrey, a brown & tan tabby. I adopted them from the shelter at Angell Memorial / Mass. Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in March 2004. Spooky and Geoffrey were very bonded before and during their time at the shelter, and the hope was that their whoever was looking to adopt a tabby cat would adopt both of them. I knew I wanted them both to come home with me, and since they've been home, they've remained very bonded with each other and become very affectionate and cuddly with me.
