Patricia's Story

After graduation I went to nursing school first at Fairleigh Dickinson then decided on a better education at St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing. It was located right across the street from Columbia University where I met my husband. He is from Idaho but he's no cowboy! He preferred to duke it out in a courtroom. Moved to St. Louis 33 years ago following a job offer from Monsanto. They said they needed a lawyer with Supreme Court experience because the case they needed him for was surely headed there. It was the Agent Orange case! Well, it didn't go there but settled instead. It still rears its ugly head every now and then. Chemical companies are the enemy, don't ya know! St. Louis has turned out to be a wonderful place to live with everything New York had to offer minus the subways. After having done Visiting Nurse work in NYC, I did more of that here. Also finished my BSN (because the ANA told me a BA in Sociology wasn't good enough) and added a specialty certification in Gerontology. I held that for 15 years. Then I decided to do something purely for myself and took up oil painting. Before long I was teaching it and taught as many as 6 classes a week in continuing education in the local college and school districts. That lead to some pretty incredible opportunities including now having 2 copies of my work in the Vatican. If you had told me 30 years ago that that is what would happen for me I'd have said you were insane. It ...Expand for more
was a matter of being in the right place at the right time, luck and some would say being blessed. I think so. Though I have retired from community health nursing, I still get calls from family, friends and neighbors to do anything and everything. You wouldn't believe what they ask! I continue to teach oil painting. It is my therapy as well as my students'. I especially enjoy teaching a group of veterans with the Veterans Administration here in St. Louis. Most are Vietnam era soldiers and this is part of their therapy. It works both ways. These soldiers are terrific and boy can they paint! My latest interest is in Amatuer radio. Tom and I just received our Technician level licenses and are trying to figure out what equipment to get. Hope I find that some of you are hams, too. We have two grown sons. One is a musician who makes a living as a research assistant to doctors doing biological research in cancer treatments in Boston. The other is a manager of a layout and design group for Gannett. They turn out the sport pages of a dozen or so newspapers daily. He's in Nashville, TN. He got there by way of a ten year stint in Egypt and South Africa. Some how he managed to be in Egypt for both 9/11 and the Egyptian revolution in 2011! Just the sort of life experiences a mother wants for her son. He's got some stories to tell. We love it in St. Louis but I still go back to Jersey every now and then. I hope to reconnect with many of you.
