Patricia's Story

You may remember me in MHS musicals as the leading lady who made you cry ... Once Upon a Mattress (1970) was the highlight of my years there. Being part of the Impressions was equally wonderful, and the choral director, Bob Burton, will always be my most admired teacher. What he could do with a swing tune was simply magic. I was Patty Samples back then ..emerging hippie, dating Bumper (who I married, then divorced .. couldn't keep up with all the groupies he was spending time with all over the country, traveling with his 'Unholy Rollers' band), living for my music classes and proud to earn 'Most Talented' in the yearbook. Music was the ONLY thing I did right back then - the rest of my life was a total mess. People like Beth Hailey and Marcy Green, Bob Welch and Charlie Brown, they kept me from falling completely off the ledge... Since high school, I earned 2 college degrees in music education & my teaching certificate ... went to teach music in Washougal (on the Columbia River) and then was dropped when their levy failed. Disgusted with public education and state funding, I worked as an educational rep. for World Book, became a Christian (smart move!!), then helped establish a private kindergarten in the old Edmonds Elementary School on Main Street. Remarried (dumb move, wrong guy), had 3 great kids, and did missionary-type work as a housemom in group homes all over the country for about 16 years. Then our family moved to West Africa (Dakar, Senegal) where my ex and I worked at Dakar Academy. He ran the facility, I ran the office. I loved working with teachers, students, parents and NOT teaching! I found my niche as a support person, managing tons of ...Expand for more
details and keeping everyone happy. We returned to the states, my kids 18, 17, 15 ... and my ex took off. Two years of transition followed, very difficult, testing my faith like nothing else has done, or ever will. My oldest & youngest were so disgusted with their father's defection that they legally changed their last name to Shannon; I took it in the divorce agreement as well. My middle daughter married a guy she'd met in Africa, and they were expecting my first grandchild. I lost over 100 lbs., changed my name to PATRICIA, and started over. Please don't call me Patty when you see me again ... I truly HATE that name. My new hubby (9 yr. anniversary this past summer) and I met online, and he's the antithesis of my ex-husband. He cracks me up every day, and he loves me as I am. God grants us a miracle by increasing the love we have for each other, each day, no matter what happens. And since both of us had been married twice before, we brought a LOT of baggage to this one... but we're both stubborn enough and wise enough not to risk losing what we've found. We'll grow old together, laughing at this screwed-up world we live in, poor but counting our blessings. Those include 4 grandchildren from his earlier marrieages, and 2 from mine. They include basically healthy bodies despite the way we've tried to destroy them for decades. And they include hope for a kingdom beyond this planet, where all the crap will finally make sense. I'm REALLY looking forward to the reunion, and hope to catch up with a lot of old faces ... I didn't know how to make friends in high school, but I look forward to fixing that when we see each other again. Blessings!!
