Patrick's Story
Hi guys,
Well, after several years of receiving irritating emails (I guess I could have blocked them - but then I wouldn't be able to find about all of you folks) I have finally succumbed to this website.
I'm still looking at birds, vultures in South Africa since 1981. Since 2000, I have been making trips to south Asia (Pakistan, Nepal and India) with the Peregrine Fund to study the massive decline in vultures that has happened there. I get to India at least a couple of times a year. We do a lot of our work in tiger reserves in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh (the heart of India). Anyone want to see tigers?
Haven't remarried after the 97 divorce. I guess I shouldn't subject a nice woman to my peculiar ways and all those feathers. Still looking, but I'm probably too picky.
I live in a great little town Wakkerstroom in northeastern South Africa. You can look it up on the web. It is a great birding area, so we get people from all over the world visiting....Expand for more
It is about 300 km southeast of Johannesburg. It gets cold in the winter and we even get the occasional snowfall each year. Wakkerstroom is far from my main study area, Thabazimbi/Kransberg/Marakele National Park (about 250 km northwest of Johannesburg), so during the birds' (Cape Vultures)breeding season I am away from home a lot. Since the birds are winter breeders, I miss a lot of the cold weather. Lots of driving though.
I like my home and gardening. I garden with indigenous plants and have been quite successful. My plot is two acres on the edge of a vlei (marsh) so I have a great view and interesting wildlife in the garden.
One day I hope to move to India to live the next 30 years of my life and do work there. Lots of interesting things to study there and not a lot of biologists to do it.
For the most part, life has been good to me, though I have had my share of bad bumps. Lots of exciting adventures left and hills to climb, just a bit slower.
