Patrick's Story
Life
American double bassist Patrick Moulds is a graduate of Southern Methodist University. He studied with esteemed double bassists Thomas Lederer, Gregory Dugan, Betty Whiton and Clifford Spohr. Prior to graduating college in 1990, Mr. Moulds won a section double bass position with The Dallas Opera Orchestra. The following season he won an audition for Assistant Principal and in 2002 was appointed Principal Double Bass of The Dallas Opera Orchestra. Mr. Moulds performs regularly with other area orchestras including the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Dallas Chamber Orchestra.
Between 1989-90, Mr. Moulds was fortunate enough to work with such artists as Pinchas Zukerman, Lubomir Kostecky of the Smetana Quartet and members of the Tokyo Quartet at the SMU Conservatory Summer Music Festival in Dallas and Taos, New Mexico. Mr. Moulds has performed chamber music throughout North Texas with the Dallas Chamber Orchestra, Fine Arts Chamber Players and Texas Winds. Additionally, he is a founding member of the Blue Plate Quartet. The BPQ is a double bass quartet performing various artists' works from Bach to the Beatles to Hendrix. The BPQ most recently performed as guest artists on the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra's New Years 2002-03 celebration at the sold-out Bass Hall in Fort Worth. Mr. Moulds performs on an Italian double bass attributed to Orfeo Carletti, circa 1935. Mr. Moulds is an avid fly fisher and guide, and summers in Taos, New Mexico, with his wife Paula Martin. Most recently Mr. Moulds has become an Adjunct Instructor in the Wellness (Physical Education) Department of Southern Methodist University and is teaching 3 semesters of Fly Fishing at SMU-in-Taos.
