Patrick's Story

Life From 1972 until 1987 I worked as a musician, playing bass with a number of bands, mostly top-40, R&B, or jazz. I started out playing with my parents in a band called All in the Family. It was a great learning experience. In 1976, I joined Zany Murphy, an R&B band from Alabama. Again, I was blessed to have been working with very talented musicians. In 1980, I moved back to R.I., and studied math at URI. I continued to play in bands - Jam, Urban Renewal, Rhyme & Reason, and Odds on Favorite. Again, I got lucky, and played with great bands and musicians. In 1987, I played my last gig. I didn't plan it that way, it just worked out that way. I still have this pipe dream of playing again - who knows. MATH. I received a BS and an MS in math at the University of Rhode Island. Great experience! From 1984-1987, I taught as an instructor at Central New England College. The students were great, and I still think of them often. The teaching experience was priceless. In 1987, I moved back to Auburn, AL, and began working on my PhD. (This is why I stopped playing music). Since 1993, I've been at Troy State University (in the southeast part of Alabama). I enjoy my students and my work. I also work as managing editor of the Alabama Journal of Mathematics. It's nothing like anything I've ever done before, and I really like it. My Wife? woman that I met at a Kingdom Hall in August of 1999. She's very spiritually minded, and has the kind of personality makes everybody love her - especially me! Speaking of Kingdom Halls, I've been a Jehovah's Witness since 1987. I've been quite active as one of Jehovah's Witnesses ever since. By the way, this is something that I recommend to everyone. Check us (JW's) out - you'll never regret it. I guarantee that it's the best move you'll ever make. TRUST ME! And when you find out I'm right, please tell me, and let me know that I have a new brother or sister! College I went to Thames Valley from 9-74 to 5-76. I didn't apply myself, and didn't do particularly well. From 6-80 to 5-84 I went to URI and got my bachelors and masters in math. I appreciate the quality teaching and mentoring in the department (Sury, Ladas, Grove, Barron, the others - they were great). I taught Math & EE at Central New England College from 9-84 to 6-87. The experience was good and the students were wonderful - I loved every one of them!) From 9-87 to 8-93 I was at Auburn getting my PhD in math. My word! - did it really take me that long??? I appreciate the guidance and mentoring of the faculty there, particularly J.P. Holmes, Gary Gruenhage, Geraldo Desousa, and of course my advisor, Ulrich Albrecht. Oh yeah, as far as Auburn goes, lunch at the Grille. See you there.
