Patrick's Story

Workplace Please forgive me if I crib a bio I had to write (3rd person) not too long ago for a project proposal (you can find me now at pistolerapost dot com) Patrick -- When Patrick Sheffield graduated from Royal High school in Simi Valley in 1976, it was with the passionate goal of becoming a motorcycle mechanic and eventually owning his own shop. After devoting two years to an Associate of Science degree in motorcycle mechanics and working in a motorcycle shop for 9 months, he realized that working on your own bike was a lot more fun than doing tune-ups on an endless stream of other people's motorcycles. After a brief stint in sewing machine repair, he heard from one of his former instructors (who recalled Patrick's constant doodling in class) of a position for a graphic artist at a motorcycle aftermarket accessory firm. He worked there for two years, producing all instructional and catalog artwork. In 1980, Patrick had the ahead-of-its-time idea of computer prepared tax returns. While the idea was received with much enthusiasm, it met little funding, so he took a job as night operator for a large Wall Street analysis and computing firm, running backups and overseeing night processing on the company's mainframe. Having the powerful computers at his disposal for many hours, he took to learning their inner workings and taught himself how to program them. This led to his promotion to software engineer and a move to a software company where he eventually had a staff of programmers reporting to him. After working in computers for nearly a decade, Patrick was having lunch with his best friend - a very successful artist, photographer, and music video director - who offered that software engineering was too esoteric an artform. He thought that editing would offer Patrick the perfect blend of technical, aesthet...Expand for more
ic, and creative. He said, "While I can't give you enough work to make ends meet, I can help get you started." With that support, in 1990, Patrick Sheffield quit his day job to join the circus. He found his friend's analysis to be spot-on. He had a passion and enthusiasm to his new career he had not known before. He could not believe that he could get paid for doing something that was so much fun. Patrick had definitely found his niche. Working, at first almost exclusively, in the relatively new field of music videos, Patrick found early success. In 1993, he received MTV's award for best editing for the REM video Everybody Hurts and the following year from Canada's Much Music for Jann Arden's video Insensitive. He has cut music videos for a wide variety of artists including Madonna, Michael Jackson, Elton John, REM, Elvis Costello, the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Radiohead, Shania Twain and many others. In 1995, Patrick started transitioning to commercial editing. Initially specializing in effects oriented spots; his repertoire has grown to include all types of commercials, from beauty to branding to comedy to cars. A veteran of over 300 commercials Patrick continues to do work in the creativity-expanding area of music videos and counts more than 180 of them under his belt. He also enjoys work on short films and documentaries and has done so for Don Was, Oprah Winfrey, Natalie Merchant and others. In 2002 he joined forces with Elvia Gaitân to start Pistolera Post. Rather than traveling the conventional route of leasing Avids and working in an offline setting, Patrick proposed embracing Apple's professional applications and building an editorial/finishing environment around them. Because of that mindset, Pistolera Post is still in business well after others with considerably deeper pockets have gone belly up.
