Patti's Story

Life After graduating from Ball State, I lived in Indianapolis for a short while before spending seven years in Milwaukee. After that we have always lived in Carmel, Indiana. During those years I had three children: Annie (who is now 21 and working on her MBA from IU), Jenny (Who is now 19 and is a sophomore at IU), and Dan (who is 16, driving, and at 6"4' plays on the h.s. basketball team). I also have a very sweet dog, Katie, who is getting old (much like we are!!). I have been divorced for five years now which was traumatic for all of us as my former husband chose a very different lifestyle. But life certainly has taught me that our lives are fragile and unpredictable so I have learned to lean strongly on my faith in God to sustain me. This last summer I had probably one of my best summer as I took off for two weeks in my car with map in hand to Michigan and just roamed where I wanted so I could bicycle, kayak, hang at the beach, and read. It was the best!! School The first teacher who really helped me to believe in myself and my ability to achieve academically was Granny Cogan in the third grade. And then once in high school, I remember getting to school early some days to visit with Mrs. Dietrich who also worked us hard but also was very funny. I loved her big smile and her pink and green hippo dress. If I could do my high school years again, for sure, I would not have a steady boyfriend. I wish I had spent more time with friends in general. That is probably why I keep telling my kids to not push the boyfriend/girlfriend thing too quickly. College I had the best roommate,...Expand for more
Robin, while attending Ball State. I sometimes was frustrated by her homesickness which I did not experience probably because I had a steady boyfriend. Sunday evening dinners were the best--soup, sandwiches and the ice cream machine!! It is amazing how much the campus has changed since I was there--new buildings and no cow path. I studied and obtained my BSN while there. I mostly remember studying and studying as there was so much work and labs and clinicals in nursing. Workplace One thing I have always felt is that I have always been blessed to love the work that I was doing. I graduated from Ball State and worked as a staff nurse in ICU and dialysis in a hospital before moving into management where I managed a dialysis unit and then moved into nursing administration, teaching and doing hospital coverage. After many years of all that which I loved, my love just evaporated. I spent a few years at home with my children who were young then, trying to figure out what I wanted to be doing. That search led me to seminary where it took me six years to obtain my masters, and MDiv. Talk about being stretched!! Not only academically was I challenged but for me that was the beginning of my computer days! Once out of school, I went through the process with the Methodist Church and was ordained and now serve a church of 2000 members in Carmel. I absolutely love my work. Probably my favorite place where I can use my gifts is preaching and mission work. I go out on about four mission trips a year to all kinds of places and doing all kinds of things. Again, I have always felt blessed to love what I do.
