Patti's Story
Life
Right now I am doing all the things that I thoroughly enjoy. I am finishing my degree in English. I am ready to retire. I do lots of volunteer work with youth football, high school athletic boosters and am statistician for a high school girls basketball team that has a record of 84-12 for the last 3 years and is currently in the hunt for the IHSA title this year. I storm chase for a hobby every year during the month of May. And, yes I do love photographing tornadoes. We put about 2500 miles on each week during May and travel anywhere from the Mexican border to the Canadian border and from the Rockies to the Mississippi.
I have one child who is now 25. He is a football coach and helps me do the statistics for the Warren High School girls basketball team. I am on the board of directors for Warren Township Youth Football. I am enjoying not having to be mom anymore, but yet still having a close relationship with my child.
My husband and I plan to retire in a few years. He wants to build a home on a lake in Wisconsin. As long as we don't stay there all year long and spend at least half of the year where it is warm I will be happy.
2008 update. Our team had it's most successful year ending 28-3 with 3 of our starting 5 having been signed to Division I scholarships at Stanford, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and University of Illinois Springfield. In addition, another of our starters will be playing for the Uni...Expand for more
versity of Chicago. We currently have 2 former players playing there.
My son, Greg, will be moving on from doing stats with me. While I will miss having him at my side during games, I know it is time for him to move on. He is starting his own business, installing wall to wall sound systems in vehicles, and that will take too much time for him to continue with the demands of being involved in sports programs. The only love that grows to separate is that between a parent and a child.
This year is proving to be one of the most violent weatherwise, so it should be a very challenging storm chasing season. The last time we had a year close to this one was when Oklahoma City got hit by a huge long lived EF5 tornado in 1999. I cannot wait to get back out into the plains this spring.
2009 Update. Another tornado chase season has come to a close for me. We were right outside of Kirksville, Missouri on Wednesday, May 13th when it was hit. Because we were on the southeast side of the system and it became so rain wrapped it was hard to see. Fabulous time chasing, though. This was my first year to be able to drive during a chase and I loved it. Usually I am a passenger. Wow, trying to stay with a group of vehicles in blinding rain and winds that would like to send your vehicle sailing is quite a challenge, but what an adrenalin rush!!!!! I don't think I will ever get to a point where I will not love the thrill of the chase.
