Patti's Story

Life After high school I moved with my family to New Orleans, attended LSU, got married, moved to Florida, had a child, got a second degree at the University of Florida, got divorced, moved to South Florida and recently got married after 20 years. School Gosh, I cannot remember the teacher that I had for Government class but... I remember opting for an A and having to get up in front of the class to give a report on how the Supreme Court decides on pornography cases. I had done my research, had the information all mapped out on 3 x 5 cards, thought I was ready but had no experience dealing with 25 pairs of eyes staring at me... I remember dropping the cards all over the floor within the first minute, scrambling behind the podium. Unable to piece together the sequence of the cards, I decided to wing it-- big mistake. When I realized my every word, my every movement was being carefully scrutinized by my peers I suffered paralyzing stage fright. I began mubbling and staring upward, counting the ceiling tiles, and praying no one was really paying attention. When the teacher interrrupted my babbling, told me I was "wasting classtime" to please "have a seat", I could "try again tomorrow", I returned to my desk devastated, red from the neck up, moving in strange robotic stiffness. The class was as embarrassed for me as I was for myself. A few classmates bliurted out harsh responses to the teacher's handling of the mishap. They were quickly dismissed by the teacher, "come on, she was babbling, wasting our time." The next day after a little coaching from my mother I returned with new set of 'spiral' 3 X 5 cards and a new attitude. I held ...Expand for more
onto my dignity and delivered the information minus the babbling and scrounging around on the floor. My classmates gave me a warm round of applause. However, that was not the last of it. The teacher asked me a question regarding the subject that I could not answer... " That's alright, with a little more research, you can report again tomorrow." Boo's were rappant. I was stunned in disbelief. Then I was mad. He was picking on me. A man that teaches fairness and justice being unfair. I'll show him. So I went down to the local community college library and researched more until they threw me out. The next day, I gave the best report of my high school career. Well--- the only report of my high school careeer. And all the while thinking: I'll show him. I glared at the teacher when I asked the final question: Are there any questions? As I walked back to my seat I got a standing ovation by a few of my classmates . I felt great. When class ended, I was gathering up my books when the teacher asked if he could speak to me for a moment. Annoyingly I accepted. That is when he explained why he had put me through so much... he could not understand how someone so outgoing could have so much trouble standing up in front of her peers and speaking easily on something she knew a lot about. It simply made no sense to him so he pressed the issue. He complimented my third speech on the subject of Pornography in th Courts and said that it was excellent and very entertaining. So I would like to thank him for believing in me. I am entering into my 25th year as an educator. I have been told by many a student that I make learning fun.
