Pat's Story
Somehow this has been too intimidating to fill in up until now...
But just for a few quick notes, after Boone High in Orlando I went north to Duke on a scholarship. First in my family to go to college out of high school, and I go 650 miles north! But it was a great match, and I made some wonderful friends.
History major at Duke, then became a summer community organizing intern for the NC Fund in Durham. Basically a white token, and I learned a lot from it! Stayed on at the Fund for another year, preparing reports, etc.
Then to UNC for Political Science grad school.
Married Walter Alt (a Boone classmate) in 1968. He'd been in Vietnam, and shot in the head. We stayed at UNC while I did the classwork for my Masters and PhD and he finished his BS. Then to Boston for his med school at Tufts.
Our son, Daniel, was born on 8/9/74....Expand for more
..Nixon flew off in a helicopter and I went to the hospital. ;-)
After a one-year teaching job at Penn State, we moved to Baltimore in '76 for Walt's residency. I'm still here.
Had our daughter, Emily, 8/12/77.
Eventually finished the PhD, but not fast enough to keep my first tenure-track job at U of Baltimore.
Then worked for the state Health Department in a policy unit, doing all sorts of interesting work.
In '87 decided to go back to teaching and took the job at Towson which I still hold.
Teaching about health policy, ethics, aging, and human subjects research all these years, but lately it's become very "hot stuff".
Walt moved on in '91, but the kids and I have done reasonably well despite that sad occurrence.
I've returned to Boone and Duke reunions, and always enjoy hearing from old friends.
