Paul's Story
Life
After an illustrious career as a burn out in high school and passing with marginal grades, I went off to BBC and FAU where I essentially did the same thing. By the time I was finished with college I'd gotten tired of partying all the time and I finally became ambitious.
Without any contacts, impressive grades or any real skills or experience, I wasn't able to secure a job in my major which was marketing and settled for a job as a management trainee at a rent to own company where I learned how to repo people's home electronics and appliances. After successfully repossessing over 1000 such items I was promoted to manager where I continued to be intensely unhappy.
If finally hit a low point in my life by being stuck in a job I hated, being basically broke and having no meaningful romantic relationships. I began reading some positive thinking books such as "The Magic of Thinking Big" and it give me a new outlook.
I decided to find a career that would make me happy. I stumbled across ballroom dancing (in high school as a loyal burnout I not only didn't dance but believed that anyone who liked disco was probably gay. But once I started going to clubs I discovered how valuable dancing was with girls, so I taught myself to dance modestly decently.)
Frankly, I started on the ballroom dancing as a way to meet more girls, but I discovered I really liked it. Over a couple of years I built up a decent business teaching private lessons and was at least paying my bills and enjoying what I did. The dancing also greatly improved my social life (partially because of the dancing and probably just the added confidence which I so lacked in high school.) I got lucky enough to be featured in the newspaper a few times and suddenly my family was proud of me.
Then, disaster struck and I developed a very unusual degenerative joint disease in both of my big toes and almost overnight b...Expand for more
ecame close to crippled. My business plunged and I realized I better find a career that didn't require being on my feet.
I'd always liked to write even in high school. (one of my most notable high school feats was writing a couple of articles for the school newspaper that were well received regarding internal suspension and something else that I don't recall.) And, I loved movies, so I decided to learn to write movies.
Over a period of two years with intense treatment for my feet which included two surgeries I was able to regain a lot of my ability to walk and dance although to this day I am somewhat limited in what I can do (no jogging). I also took trips to LA and worked hard at screenwriting and made some inroads.
Once again I had a turn of bad luck. During this time I also took up boxing at a professional gym (I am not naturally tough and it took a lot of weight lifting and karate in high school not be a total wimp). I became pretty good and could last 3 rounds with the guys that were at beginning stages of their professional careers when I was badly injured in a gym match and nearly died with a subdural hemotoma. After 3 weeks in ICU I emerged with a new shaved head and a mandate to no longer box. I found a replacement as I train Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and have fun with that, even competing half a dozen times.
Through my dancing I met some affluent people who helped steer me into some other business as my movie writing continued to grow. At this time I have several movie credits including one as a writer/exectuive producer for CRUEL WORLD with Jaime Pressly and Ed Furlong which is a $3 million dollar film. I'm represented in LA and am listed on IMDB.
II am happily married for 5 years now and am a proud stepfather to my wife's son who is good ten year old kid. They are both from Peru.
