Paul's Story
Update, July 2020:
Holed up in Seattle condo during coronavirus pandemic. Moved in 2010. Bought 3 motorcycles; got rid of one, the other 2 are mothballed in need of repairs. Can't keep the damn things running. Will probably get a little electric Fiat or Smart car. Electric is the way. Maintenance is so much simpler. Bicycles? Yep. Current ride is a Brompton folder, made in England. Lovely little thing. Still have that job driving shuttle for Microsoft, but haven't actually worked since March. They're talking about bringing us back, maybe August. I didn't keep up with the digital audio, much to my regret. Dipping my toes back in recently, but computers need upgrading. Trying to get back into singing. Even do vocal exercises, but inconsistently, just like I do everything. No significant relationships, but I'm content this way. Turns out I am so introverted that I *like* isolation. The pandemic has been a boon in this regard. Hmm what else? Have been trying to learn to play electric bass. My practice habits suck, so progress is slow. But it is a cool instrument. I remember going into Mr. Purvis' band room at TJ and learning Gus Blazek's bass part on the school's bass, just for fun. It didn`t occur to me to stick with it, because 16 year old frontal lobes, amirite? Damn. By now I'd be good at it.
Oh, languages. They're kinda my thing. I'm only decent at Thai, though, 'cause I was immersed in it for over 3 years. The others are more like hobbies, but mobile apps make it so much easier. Прівіт, мої друзі! โชกดีนะครับ เพื่อนทั้งหลาย!
[Circa 2009: Well, I just spent well over an hour writing here and it all disappeared. If you want to click the opt-out at the bottom, SAVE YOUR DATA first. Duh. I swear I knew that. Maybe I'll update this another time....Expand for more
BTW, I have another account on here...it wasn't intentional. They're both me. Comment on this one, I haven't paid for the other so I don't have access to comments and such.
So I'm Paul, the nerdy one. Still play guitar, never married, no kids, went back to school numerous times, spent time overseas (in Thailand), live in Seattle, drive a bus for Microsoft (but ironically don't use their software on my own computers).
I have a nephew who graduates from college in May 2009, about a month away as I write this. I get to go to D.C. to watch him.
For a hobby I geek out in front of computers making things not work. JACK won't run anymore! Rosegarden won't play nice! That's just the laptop, all that stuff works great on the desktop. I play with digital audio, making little recordings and stuff here at Studio 909. I run Ubuntu Studio 8.04, the last version with a working real-time kernel. I made a backing track for Monk's "Round Midnight" that I'm pleased with, but Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay" is kicking my butt.
So that's the kind of thing I do with my time.
Oh, and I still ride bikes--the pedal kind. I'm between bikes right now, and it's so painful. I can cut 30 minutes off my three-bus commute by using a bike, and bypassing one or more transfer. Car? No, thanks. Payments, interest, gas, insurance, repairs...I'd rather not. And I've decided I don't want another internal combustion engine vehicle. I've owned 8 or 9, and I drive one all day at work...that's enough planetary destruction for one guy. When they make an electric car I can afford, that has decent range, power, and safety, then they'll get my money, and not before
LOL let's see how long that commitment lasts...maybe it will stick. Maybe I will drink the Kool-Aide. We'll see.]
