More about Paul I wrote this poem about one of the high school sports teams I cover with photos and newspaper articles: Ode to Wiggins Tigers Varsity Baseball 2019. The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Wiggins team that day. The score stood four to one with one half inning left to play. Mazzuca hit a rocket for out number one. When Devon Harshman followed, it seemed they might be done. But Bryce Ford smacked a base hit, as he so often had. And Dillon Harshman did the same. Isn't he the lad?! But, there, the rally ended. No fantasy -- this was true. The Tiger Faithful mood had at last turned blue. But only for a moment, did this melancholy tarry. For, compared to the season, this mood was most contrary. It began ...Expand for more
in the frigid blasts of April, four straight vanquishings of foes. Followed by a slump of one-for-seven. Oh, golly, such woes! A lesser team might have folded, yielding to despair. But not this Phillips team of Tigers. Nothing ordinary there. The outlook then turned sunny. Eight straight began with Yuma! Scoring twelve to naught they took revenge. Just like Montezuma! On and on it went, until, at end, a fateful pair with Wray. They'd won six straight, but needed two more to save the day. Last year, those Eagles had dashed the playoff hopes of Tiger Nation. "Not this time," said the Tigers, "that's just more motivation." Two more to play, on Saturday. Two more, to seal their fate. Two more, they won! What a day! Now, on the road to state! First stop: districts, to slay the playoff dragons! "In Akron, versus Holyoke, we'll circle up the wagons!" Now, there, events unfolded that were very much disputed. They won! They lost? They won! They lost? Arguments? Refuted! The game, they lost. Yet, playoff end was commuted! For that, we thank you RPI: you're so convoluted! Ranked twelfth at state, was Wiggins, and hoping for an upset. The original one score and four had pared down to a quartet. T'was Wiggins, Peyton, Fowler, Rye. In Pueblo, now, the elite of 2A vie. Those Panthers of Peyton came to the show top-rated. At their hands the Tigers plans were soon to be truncated. They drew first blood, the Tigers did, in the second frame. Logan Kerr drove in Dillon Harshman, as Wiggins staked their claim. But runs were few, and favored Peyton made them count. They built a lead the scrappy Tigers just could not surmount. Three in the next frame. One more in the last. Tip your hat to champs Peyton. They were unsurpassed. But, honor these Wiggins Tigers, champs in their own way. Effort, character, respect, as AP taught them. You see it in their play. And you'd better watch out for them in the coming year. Or else, sure as shootin', you'll sadly shed a tear!

An update to my description of this photo. Aside from maintaining the over-the-top, bloviated, bombastic tone of the original, I'm proudest of finally having broken the 200-word-sentence barrier (212). Enjoy.
