Paul's Story

Life I actually droped out of HS in early '69. Not to worry, I did finish and graduate. I didn't go to college immediately, but went much later using my GI Bill to help pay for part of it. Graduated magna cum laude from U.Maryland. Because my life didn't seem to have any direction, late '72 I decided to join the AF. It provided me with training, the aforementioned GI Bill, some great times, lot's of travel, and a few very good friends. After the AF (Mar 73 - Oct 78), I went back to Germany as a civilian working initially for Burroughs (now Unisys) and a division of Xerox (later Loral). I spent a total of 13 years in Germany. They were some of the best years of my life. I like to tell people I was born in China, grew up in LA, and matured in Europe. But I grew tired of the drab, grey winters so decided to move on. While on holiday in New Zealand I was offered a job so my wife and I took the plunge in Feb '89. Of course, not too difficult a choice for my wife since she is from Christchurch, NZ, where we live! Since then we've had 2 kids and pretty much settled in here, but I still love America. I'll also be an American first. School I have a weird sense of humor(some might say I'm just weird) anyway, but I was a bit of a class clown. It was mainly to hide my shyness. Like most guys of that age, I had a cr...Expand for more
ush on a couple of girls, but just couldn't get past my shyness to ask them out. I did date one of them for a bit after HS. And went out the once with another a couple years post HS as well. Unfortunately, neither worked out long term. The biggest shock of my life in HS was realizing I wasn't as smart as I thought I was. Had my life mapped out: civil eng. degree, work a bit, then architect, etc. But when I realized I couldn't grasp calculas or physics I knew I wasn't ever going to become an engineer. Combined with family upheavals at the time, I took the easy way out and left HS in my senior year. God, how I wish I had taken the time to seek out counsel from others. Water under the bridge, right? Military Practically all my best friends, the people I keep in touch with, are the guys I met in the air force. This is despite the fact that all of use live in different parts of the world and only see each other once in a blue moon. I did a lot of growing up, especially when stationed in Germany. Which is where I had some of the best times and the worst times of my love life. But hey, I was young and single! Besides the travel which I did a lot of in Europe, I also learned to appreciate European women who were so different to their American counterparts. Yup, I really enjoyed them during my years in Germany.
