Paul's Story

I retired from US government service in 2008 after nearly 30 years as an analyst and manager at CIA (yes, that CIA, not the Culinary Institute of America, although that would've been cool, too). I started at CIA in 1979 as a specialist in Asian politics and afterward held a broad range of analytic, staff, and leadership assignments on both regional and functional issues. Among these were a stint as editor and briefer on the staff of the President's Daily Brief and a 3-year secondment to the National Intelligence Council as Deputy National Intelligence Officer for East Asia. I headed the DCI Environmental and Societal Issues Center from 1999 to 2001. In September of that year I co-founded and led the CIA Red Cell, a contrarian (or alternative) analysis program. From 2005 to 2007 I was the Agency's Officer in Residence at Georgetown, where I taught a graduate seminar on "Intelligence in a Democracy." My last CIA assignment was as Special Assistant to the Director of Strategy Management. I'm a recipient of the Director's Award (2004), the highest achievement award personally give...Expand for more
n by the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, as well as the Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal (2008). After leaving CIA, I spent 5 years consulting with for the Monitor Group, a Cambridge-MA-based managerial consultancy, after which I returned to CIA as a consultant,/research/writer for Deloitte Consulting, where I spent two years before retiring with Denise (class of '67) to coastal North Carolina.. For what it's worth, after entering the US Army and marrying Denise, both in 1968, I was posted to Fort Bliss, in El Paso, TX. We lived there for a year and a half. Returning to NJ with GI Bill money in hand, I graduated from Rutgers College in 1974 and from 1974 to 1979 studied in the Department of Government at Harvard University, after which I abandoned work on a doctoral dissertation and left Harvard for CIA. We have three grown sons, one in DC Metro, one in Southeast VA, and one out in CA. Drop me a line, say hello, let me know what you've been up to in the 57 years (yeah, a long time ago in a galaxy far far away) since we graduated from JFK. Best, PF
