Paul's Story
After Helix and San Diego State (Russian major), I worked in machine translation for a few years and then attended a Russian Orthodox seminary in New York. They decided that I'd make a better librarian than a priest.
After being sent to library school by St. Vladimir's Seminary, I served as librarian for a decade. Most of the final years were split between library work and programming database applications for the seminary. When I moved to Antiochian Village in 1987, this dual assignment continued. After leaving the Village in 1996 I freelanced as a developer (database and websites), wrote, and tried selling computer system. I wrote and published a couple of biographies and lots of articles before hanging up my career in academia.
In 2000 I moved to Connecticut to become au pair to my first grandchild; while waiting for his delivery, I signed up as a temp and was assigned to MasterCard. The offer of a full-time job (as a programmer) was too good to pass up, so diapers disappeared from my resume. Downsized in 2003, I "bummed around" in La Me...Expand for more
sa for six months, helping my brother-in-law in his handyman business, then returned east to find a job. Librarians and programmers were in low demand, so I earned a license to sell life and health insurance, specializing in services to senior citizens at Bankers Life and Casualty. I'm no salesman -- proved that well! -- but I can write, so I'm freelanced.
When I retired at age 62 (why gamble you'll reach 66?) I took a gig as au pair for the little girl of someone who'd been my kids' friend back in New York. That lasted a couple of years and then I moved to Boise, ID, to be near one son and his family. They oversaw my hospitalization for rampant diabetes and sepsis. Insulin, diet, and moderate walking have it close to under control.
In 2015 I met Marilee Grier on OKCupid. On 31 July 2015 we married and I moved into her house in Twin Falls, ID. We had a fine ole time until she developed brain cancer and died seven months later on 9 Feb 2020. It was ghastly. I live with my daughter, Mischa, in Latrobe, PA. I'm no longer much of an optimist.
