Paul Grimshaw:

CLASS OF 1978

Paul's Story

Life I refuse to believe that I am as old as my driver's license says I am... I have very fond memories of my life in Syracuse and my days at JD and the many friends, close and casual - with whom most I've completely lost touch. I recognize that those friends of my youth have helped shape my life thus far..... I moved from Syracuse to pursue a musical career in Nashville (1987) and while performance-art was not meant to be (I realized I kind of suck....) I did work in the music industry for 7-8 years and loved living in Nashville and still count my closest friends there - I may end up back there one day. I attended Onondaga Community College before moving from SYR and I attened Belmont University in Nashville as a part-time adult student but it wouldn't be until 2000 that I would ultimately complete a degree - BA English. (Columbus University) In Nashville I developed my marketing and PR skills and dabled in Radio (morning show host on a now defunct AM station) Most of my music industry worked consited of marketing and PR and then later I moved into production and artist relations - my biggest claim to fame was working closely to help sign Jars Of Clay - a kind of crossover, Christian pop/rock four piece that had a #1 mainstream ROCK hit (Flood) and has now sold 6 or 7 million records and I think are awesome - musically and otherwise. I also worked with Amy Grant, Charlie Daniels, Bill Medley and Ian Eskelin, with whom I was fortunate enough to tour Europe and Austalia. I have never been married - long story and do not have children so I've been a bit of a Bohemian vagabond at times, thought I think I'm pretty well grounded (the jury is still out) As my ADD kicked into full gear I accepted a position with a an up-start marketing/radio/publishing company and moved to Rolla, MO (2hrs west of St. Louis). There I did another stint as a morning show host on KDAY (contemporay music format) I also developed my writing skills (if not my spelling skills) freelancing for their monthly pub, The Goodlife Magazine. When the marketing company began to fall into "financial dis-repair" I moved to Myrtle Beach, SC for what should have been a 6 month visit with my Mom who lived here at the time - I pursued my new-found love of writing and freelanced for a couple of years and landed a job as editor of the Myrtle Beach Guide Magazine - a tourist publication with a 1.4million circ/di...Expand for more
stribution along the northeast SC coast. That started in 1999 and continues to this day. I am a regular weekly columnist with Weekly Surge Magazine (google it) where I write the Music Notes column and do 4-5 cover pieces each year. I also write for GS Magazine (google it) My brother David, class of '74, passed away in 2001 from ALS (Lou Gerhig's Disease) and this has left just my mother and me as the only remaining Grimshaws and we're still here in Myrtle Beach and doing well. I rekinled my performance interests in about 2000 and have been performing regularly at area clubs, the brand new Hard Rock Park $(480 mil theme park opened in spring of 2008). We also perform at weddings and corporate functions (just recently opened for Blues Traveler at the House Of Blues) - my band plays covers from the 60's to current acoustic pop (John Mayer, Matchbox 20, Jack Johnson, etc.) Three years ago I obtained my Real Estate license and have been slowly making in-roads into the real estate investment market representing buyers and sellers. There are worse places to be than Myrtle Beach - it's kind of grown on me - 275 clear, sunny days each year, mild winters and a lovely spring, summer and fall - although summers in upstae NY will forever be my favorite (Pratts Falls, Green Lakes, Thousand Islands, Adirondacks, Finger Lakes, etc.). I hope to continue freelance feature writing, especially travel writing, and have recently finished a novel (fiction) and am seeking representation. The story revolves around a group of Civil War reenactors (a hobby in which I've just recently become involved with) and is an action-adventure, time-travel thriller. I hope this has not been boring and complete overload....but that's me in a nutshell! School I can't say who my biggest crush was...too embarrasing! If I could do it all over again I wouldn't change a thing. My funniestst moment might be the time me and my pals thwarted Mr. Houge's (sp?) efforts to catch us after a "nooner" in the "wacky woods." A truly clueless, but most-likley decent man... I loved skipping class in late spring and hiking to WHite Lake for a bit of skinny dipping and beer! and I guess these shared memories would also classify for the "craziest" memories too! I mostly remember the great kids of our class (and surrounding classes) who challenged and inspired me with their youthful enthusiasm and energy...oh to be 17 again!
