Paul's Story

Life Briefly....after graduating Ridgewood High School in 1963: I took a hitch-hiking tour of the US that summer with a friend (we covered about 7,000 miles in three weeks and had many an adventure along the way...). From October of '63 to September of '67 I was in the USAF: Texas, Mississippi, Nevada, Viet Nam,and Massachussetts. A radio operator, I left the service with quite a few good memories and several 'decorations,' including the Bronze Star. From '67 to '73 I attended college, first at Fairleigh Dickinson in Rutherford, and then at Montclair State. (It took six years because I 'dropped out' twice!) Highlights: A motorcycle tour of Europe in the summer of '69; a motorcycle tour of the US the following year; visiting fellow RHS classmate, Joe Lobb & his girlfriend in Vancouver BC; hitch-hiking across Canada with a 'stripper' I met in BC; discovering the joys of 'mind-altering' drugs (hey! This was the late sixties & early seventies - give me a break!); getting involved in Theatre at MSC; my first apartment ($51/month!) in Montclair; lots of good friends and great times! After graduating...there was a lost year or two (including an abortive stint at The New York Law School), then...through the good offices of fellow RHS classmate, Jerry DeJaager, I landed a primo 'gig' as a Human Relations trainer to resort hotel employees on the island of Jamaica in '75 & '76! Highlights: lots of snorkeling, ganja (hey! this was Jamaica, mon!), friends and family visiting from 'the mainland, reggae, more motorcycling (I had purchased a bright yellow Yamaha 360 motocross bike in Florida & had it shipped down...complete with 'phony' Florida tags...), rum punch, and great fun with a video camera which was supplied through work, and at the time was quite rare(!)....After Jamaica, I moved to New York City and took up the life of an Actor: classes at HB Studios in Greenwich Village; an apartment on the Upper West Side (just off Central Park West...two bedrooms, fireplace, living room, & kitchen - $165/mo!); g...Expand for more
reat parties; roles in crappy theatrical productions in impossibly obscure venues; landing a Great Gig with Marvel Comics as 'Spider-Man' at personal appearances all around the US & Canada from '76 to '79...; appearing in various film school projects; getting a 'bit' role in 'Ragtime'...waiting on tables...driving a cab...managing a Rolls Royce limo outfit in Greenwich Village...abandoning 'The Big Apple' for digs in Hoboken...having a 'steady girlfriend' (also an RHS grad) for a couple of years - with a lot of fun times and crazy exploits...being 'stalked' by a 'loon'...getting involved in 'Stand-Up' Comedy in 1984...'fleeing the country' in 1985 and returning to my 'homeland' of New Zealand...establishing myself 'Down Undah' as an Actor, Improvisor, Comic, 'Voice-Over', Director, Secretary/Office Manager of NZ Actors Equity, represtantive of the NZ Writers Guild...home owner (in Wellington)...another motorcycle (a vintage Triumph Bonneville purchased in CA and shipped to NZ)...steady female companion and Step-Dad to her young son...lots of great times ...yadda yadda yadda... returned to the US in late '92 and settled in Portland, Oregon...appeared in a TV Movie shortly thereafter...won the Portland Comedy Competition in May of '93...set up house with a woman I met in NZ in '88, started driving for the local Transit system in late '94...married in '95...moved into our own home in late '96...son, Willem, born shortly thereafter (my wife already had a child from a previous relationship: Kiwa, presently age 18, who I adopted in 2005). Currently, I live in Charleston, WV about five minutes away from my kids, who live with their mother. (We officially divorced in June of 2007. I retired from my job in Portland in late '06 in order to relocate to WV to be close to my kids.) These days I fly airplanes for a skydiving club on the weekends and also work as a Flight Instructor. I enjoy activities with my kids, and tooling around the backroads of WV at the controls of my British motorcycle/sidecar rig. Life is good!
